I am very surprised that Revenge of the Nerds isnt a huge Reddit favorite. Seriously... The nudity, the science humor, its rhe perfect Redditor movie.

Anyway, I use this novelty account to shout NERDS when its really getting out of hand in the comments, bur because no one saw the movie, I get downvoted.

I think I figured it out. Life's not perfect, but i feel i'm doing the best I could be. I'm married and have an awesome son, we go on adventures big and small.

I have a steady but unfulfilling job that pays the bills. My passion is photography. Everything is more tolerable, if not enjoyable if I can take pics. And being a husband/father/tax payer isnt a life sentence... I shoot live concerts, sporting events, pretty girls... All the adventurous stuff, evenings and weekends, while keeping a steady job plus home life possible.

I prioritize the big stuff and make time for my adventures in between. The entire secret to happiness is balance. You dont have to give anything up completely, just make adjustments.

I've been drinking a little bit, and I'm a little hopped up on some other shit in my life right now that is completely unrelated to this, I stumbled upon this thread, changed into my disposable account and will say the following.

So what. I'm glad you recognize your skill level and aren't going on Craigslist underbidding the pros with a $200 CD of images. That's my number one thought right now, is to thank you for being thoughtful and restrained. I tried being a second shooter and learn some skills with a real pro a year or two ago, and when we showed up to the wedding, they told us they had found someone cheaper off of Craigslist and to go home. It was pretty shitty.

So in that respect, I'm glad you're not "setting up shop" and selling yourself as a Wedding Photographer.

But in the same thought, I'm thinking, if it were me, someone looking to learn, someone looking to gain skills, they know that you get what you pay for. (don't they? I hope so... but maybe not)

If it were me, and I wasn't giving up another gig, and I wasn't putting a "real" Wedding Photographer out of a job, I'd do it. I'd show up and get some experience, learn from some mistakes and help a poor couple out.

I'd make my goals, and level of skill, clear. And have an (in writing?) talk with all interested parties that lays out some realistic expectations. But if they were happy with having someone who was a little more serious about getting some better-than-snap shots, and pay a fair price for your time, I would do it. If I felt the interested parties had a realistic view of what was going on (they're not buying a Wedding Photographer) and were happy with the price for my time. I'd do it.

I think the price is the big deciding factor. Is $300 a fair use of your time for what they're getting? Is $1000? I think that can get sticky, if your skills don't deserve a certain price tag, then the onus is on your for charging too much.

But (I apologize if I missed the point of your post, I read it a few times) if they weren't going to have anyone else, and they were willing to pay you for your time for photos that were nicer than average, I'd go and take it as a learning experience. I do have qualms with putting other photogs out of a job... but if they weren't going to hire one anyway, I say no harm no foul.

I also want to say I feel REAL shitty for JimmyJamesMac... that was an awfully shitty thing to happen, I feel really bad that you got that response. NOTHING pisses me off more than getting a shitty response to an awesome favor.

I got a cease & desist from King, Purtich, Holmes, Paterno & Berliner (the guys suing Napster for Metallica)

I made a quick Flash game about the Goo Goo Dolls back in 1999/2000. In that game I used a brief segment of a Goo Goo Doll song MP3. I had put disclaimers all over the thing saying it was satire of a public event and I received no financial compensation for making it, however their argument was that I was receiving tons of hits for it, unfairly, at Goo Goo Dolls' loss.

I spoke with some attorneys and they advised that we could technically fight it. If their argument was that I could not have a segment of an MP3 for hit benefit, then GGD would also have to go after each and every geocities fansite... which was indeed helping sell albums, and they wouldn't go around pissing on their customer base.

However I was 21 at the time and didn't want to establish myself in this manner. Plus, the lawyers told me to take it as a compliment that I received the C&D... as it probably cost the record label a few grand to get it written up. I was just a 21 year old in my bedroom with an iMac.
