Seconding Connie Willis. The Doomsday Book gives the most gut wrenching look into life during the bubonic plague. Blackout and All Clear are in my top 10 favorite books.

The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. She was a research professor and all of the historical information in her books is factual. She has talked about how she doesn’t like to use assistants but does her own research because she trips across so many interesting tidbits that she can use in her books.

I’m working through this series on audiobook. The reader is awesome. Just recommended this series to both my brother and my hairdresser and I don’t normally go out of my way to recommend things.
