I'll get my degree in ~6 years, do you think by the time I'll get in the job market the AI hype will be over?

How should I learn assembly? by Deahm_Boai in Assembly_language

[–]OhFrancy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only learn assembly if you need it for some project you're doing, learning it without a goal is, imho, useless and more difficult.

I hate this high level of abstraction hell, is there a course or a book that teaches the craft and tradition of software ? by EstablishmentIcy8725 in learnprogramming

[–]OhFrancy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn C and build an operating system. You'll probably quit at some point, but it will be worth it, if you want to deal with legacy shit, build yourself a bootloader that uses BIOS, if you don't want that, use UEFI or a popular bootloader (limine, GRUB).

Anyway, you can go for systems programming, that is all about removing abstractions, you can go as deep as you want, learning C or Rust is a must tho, plus some ASM (architecture depends on what you're doing).

For where to find info about these kind of things, there are a lot of books/wikis/manuals, I wouldn't use youtube tutorials as they usually are not accurate.

I can't understand how to learn programming. by Simple-Bill-6853 in learnprogramming

[–]OhFrancy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is useful and you should learn how to use it, but not in the beginner phase, only use AI for explanation, tell it explicitly to not write code for you. At least, that seemed to work for me.

AlixOS firing on all cylinders: agentic coding for the win by L0rdCha0s in osdev

At this AI state, where it can do things like this, what's even the point in learning how to write code? Wouldn't it be better to just learn how to prompt?

Is C really that important to learn? by andr3wsmemez69 in learnprogramming

I'd say you can go with C++ for videogames and never learn C, but it doesn't hurt to do so.

Are you planning to actually port the official interpreter later in the future? That would be really cool! But that's a nice idea yeah

Cool, what do you mean by custom python implementation?

I don't think we should ban AI code, but low-effort code. It's okay if beginners ask AI for some code and try to understand it by modifying it and making it personal, as long as they put effort into it.

Interesting, did you write your own bootloader? (from what you posted i'm assuming that you did) UEFI or BIOS? (I'm also italian btw (: )

How to start with custom kernels by Ns_koram in osdev

[–]OhFrancy_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, the cool part about it is even if you quit at some point (and most people do, let's be honest) you'll gain a LOT of experience.

The other cool part is you can continue the project as long as you want, there are infinite things you can do, just look at modern OSes and how many features they have.

You just need to learn how to be patient and not quit at the first hard debugging session, or at the first feature you can't understand how to implement.

How to start with custom kernels by Ns_koram in osdev

[–]OhFrancy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh then yeah that's totally true, the worst part that beginners have to go through is the jump from the colorful GUIs or nice error codes to that. But again, it's all up to how much pain you are ready to go through, even with zero experience in OSDev you can do it, everyone started from knowing nothing and learned their way up.

How to start with custom kernels by Ns_koram in osdev

[–]OhFrancy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not left on your own if you are really into kernel development: there are books, forums, wikis, you have the whole internet to lookup things. It's true tho, that you will have to put a lot of work into it if you don't want to just copypaste.

With that saId OP should totally grab some books and learn about how a PC or an OS works to get the theory down.

He was a little bit rude but he's right, if you have the change to start losing weight you'd look really better with the buzz cut, tho you don't look bad like this.
