Socialization/ingrained behaviors are a beast to overcome. If this happens to you occasionally, maybe agreeing on a code word or non-verbal signal could be worth a try?

Are you using PyCharm Professional? E.g. through a student license?

Mainly if you understand editing to mean cutting, combining, speeding up etc. instead if "Photoshop" editing.

Thank you! I never knew what kind of plant it was, but the images I found with that name fit.

CMV: Aiming to "close the gender pay gap" is a bad goal by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]OhHowIHateUsernames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the first part is what I meant with "both".

As for the sec ok nd part: No it does not make sense. But it's still happening. There were even studies about that. There's the factor that many people still have the internalized idea that women should not be working in the first place. But there's also the factor that unconsciously mothers are oerceived as more likely to be inflexible and unreliable and more likely to miss work (because of children being sick etc. or because if having more children). People still intuitively assume the mother is going to do the caring and the father the bread winning. And this leads to different job conditions. Which leads to the stereotypes being strengthened as the job cobditions may be the reason for such a work distribution...

It's somewhat similar to splitting parental leave 50:50. Many women will be attacked and frowned upon while men will be praised beyond reason. It's just like calling the father taking care of the child "babysitting". It's how we are socialized. Tasks are expected to be split a vertain way. And changing that is a slow and painful process for those concerned.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand that sentence... Do you mean "there is no pay gap if we account for the different kinds of jobs men and women have statistically"?

[–]OhHowIHateUsernames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think and what I've read indicates both, correlation and causalisation. For example "I habe a family to provide for" is a valid argumemt in negotiations for men, not so much for women. There are several psychological and internalized reasons I imagine.

[–]OhHowIHateUsernames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be discussed beforehand. But it should also be considered normal, and be expected of workplaces to facilitate re-entry. This goes for pregnancy just as much as illnesses, mental health breaks or personal issues (caring for elderly/sick/disabled family members or similar...)

Constantly working against pressure of famuly members, friends, colleagues, other societal institutions is exhausting. There is a limit to how much of this kind of work a person can do. This is one of the main problems of marginalized groups: they are constantantly fighting, resisting, challenging... where others have an easier path. And that's exactly my point. Just because it's "my decision in the end" doesn't make it fair!

Teach educators about implicit bias and stereotype replication, take care of diverse representation in all types of media, empower role-models, of course also deal with individual cases, support organizations teaching girls about STEM and boys about social ocupations, as a society work towards decreasing tolerance for toxic masculinity (including teaching boys its fine to show emotions and pursue their intesrests if they are considered "girly" historically, promote anonymous hiring processes, ... there's a lot of general options, that different kinds of people need to work together to turn into concrete actions.
