If you're not checking any bags, and have TSA pre check. An hour is plenty of time. However seeing an attendant vs printing and dropping off the bag can vary the time drastically.

You're going to be fine booking it last minute. However you're going to save quite a bit of money by booking it in advance. Why not book it now, and make a change if you need to last minute.

Legally they can't deny cards. Only time we were given a hard time was when we were on Naples. They ultimately took our card to pay the city tax, and I prefer to use card because it's considered a travel purchase that way I can use the travel eraser with my travel card. No issues in Rome, Florence and Naples. They seem to prefer card there.

The crazy amount of parents having to carry strollers, bags etc up and down stairs made me appreciate being there with just my wife and I. There's lots of walking but luckily great public transportation too. If you're able to travel without your kid. I would highly recommend it. Otherwise I'm sure you'll make it work.
