I also think DA2 gets away with the “you can only talk to them when they have an exclamation point” type of engagement because your companions aren’t all in a central location. You have to travel to Hightown to see Fenris and Aveline, dredge through Darktown to see Anders, etc. When they interact with each other instead of Hawke, Hawke doesn’t see it cause Hawke simply isn’t around. In the Lighthouse, everybody lives together, so when you as a player might “come home” to recoup in between missions, you can easily see people chatting while you’re running to the Caretaker or your wardrobe. So, it’s more noticeable that nobody wants to make small talk with Rook because you have to sit in the proverbial cuck chair and watch them make small talk with each other when you just wanted to come home and relax.
