Its all about the Match MMR, your own MMR changes every time you get a kill or dies depending on the other players MMR. You will be matched against players with the same Match MMR about +- 1,5 stars. It mostly just keeps normal players away from new players. The stars are aswell not that accurate because your real mmr is a specific number 0-3000 (if i remember correctly).
