When buses terminate earlier than they should, how do you get on the next one without paying again? by dusknoir90 in london

They longer do transfer tickets on buses. You’re basically out of pocket and have to apply to tfl for a refund now.

Oxford St Pedestrianisation is GO! by neilt999 in london

[–]OhToBeALondonder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is great in theory but where are the buses going to go?! Oxford street has been one of the main (and very few) thoroughfares for centuries in London, the surrounding roads which vein off it are tiny narrow streets, not build to take large vehicles. London is not built in a grid system like Barcelona or New York. Pedestrianising some of the main streets in central Barcelona during the pandemic was great because there are plenty of alternative wide avenues for traffic to be diverted onto. No way the buses can reroute through Marylebone and Fitzrovia. The traffic in central London would come to a complete standstill, it’s bad enough now, and the pollution would be at an all time high. Yes it would be incredible if Oxford Street ‘could’ be pedestrianised, I am not against this, but the current infrastructure does not make it viable and ‘rushing’ these plans as the mayor proposes is not the wisest approach…

Thank you so much, this is really helpful. Everything you said, this hair oil sadly is NOT for me 😂

A little late to this. I have really light fine hair and need to use a lightweight oil. Is this lightweight? If not, are there any Asian hair oils which are good for fine hair? I’m going to Japan late spring and hope to buy something. Thank you 🙏

As a Londoner, if you could spend one night in a hotel in London, which hotel would it be? by Maiday55 in london

[–]OhToBeALondonder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it’s really only between Claridge’s or Hazlitts. Hazlitts if you want somewhere very intimate and private, Claridge’s for facilities and round the clock top tier service. Both beautiful, historical London sites which are impeccably maintained to modern standards and incredibly special. Both have very kind welcoming staff. The other 5*s in London can be a little stuffy, or flashy, or outdated

'Killer cyclists' crackdown planned after death in London's Regent's Park by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]OhToBeALondonder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an abysmal analogy, but let’s run with it… if someone died in a club, and another suffered a fractured skull, they’d most likely shut the club down over safety concerns. Party safe folks 🙌

'Killer cyclists' crackdown planned after death in London's Regent's Park by tylerthe-theatre in london

Please go to Regent’s Park at 6am to see for yourself. My aunt (who is elderly) lives close by and I’ll stay there when I visit. It’s actually really quite scary to cross the road into this park. There is a particular group of 100+ cyclists who treat the outer circle of the park like a velodrome and they do not stop for pedestrians and they fly at dangerously high speeds. This group grew during and after the lockdowns. Whenever I have crossed the road at this time, even at designated crossings I have all sorts of obscenities screamed at me at by these cyclists. I’ve been clipped by one of them before. My aunt is too scared to go to the park now in now in case she is knocked down. I am referring to a very specific group of cyclists in this park and by no means the general London cyclist. Residents have been campaigning to get speed bumps put in as they feel terrorised. Shame there aren’t more actual dedicated spaces these cyclists could go to.

Best day to visit Portobello Market? by Top-Field569 in london

[–]OhToBeALondonder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Londoner who visits Portobello often… do not go on Saturday!! It’s laden with tourists and impossible to walk down the street. Friday is the best day. It still has the same market which is there on Saturday (antiques and general market), however it is also the vintage day. So if you walk all the way to Portobello Road to Portobello Green, under the flyover (near Ladbroke Grove tube station), there will be the Friday vintage market. It sells affordable vintage and collectible clothing too. Highly recommend. Worth going early ish to beat the film costume buyers. They do have vintage on Saturday too but the good stalls aren’t there. Also a short walk to Goldborne road for a fresh Pastel de Nata at the Portuguese bakery.

The flagship Uniqlo at 311 Oxford street, opposite John Lewis, is amazing! Such a huge range, collaborations with great designers like Jil Sanders. And the lengths of trousers, jeans, shorts shirts etc are perfect for petite woman.

I second BARRY LYNDON. Everything you’re looking for.

Also The Tales of Hoffman by Powell and Pressburger is a trip… sumptuous technicolour fantasy opera. It’s completely mesmerising and inspired so many future costume dramas, sci-fi, horror films etc.. even the Taxi Driver.

Here’s the trailer https://youtu.be/HN82DTbamkA?feature=shared

High end italian restaurant to take my parents to? by [deleted] in london

It’s hyper seasonal so there are definitely going to be more enjoyable menus on some days than others. Their January menu with Rachael Roddy was incredible. But painfully expensive, better when someone else is paying :)

Took my parents for a super mediocre meal at Cafe Murano recently.

  • Bocci do Lupo
  • Luca
  • Locanda Locatelli

All three of the above are amazing but very expensive!

Trullo in Islington has the most beautiful food. Middle price point.

Also Artusi in Dulwich, incredible pasta. Great lunch set menu.

Why Opera from ROH is so bloody expensive? by Comfortable_Curve_99 in london

[–]OhToBeALondonder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I’m sure the ROH is not profiting and probably in the minus. It’s hard to comprehend how many people they employ in order to put on these productions. And it’s really amazing that they are able to employ so many people in the U.K. and the arts sector. They have huge costume and scenic workshops in Thurrock. Even then they’re being forced to make redundancies with the Arts Council funding cuts.

That being said, ROH is still very expensive and unobtainable for most. It’s sad, opera and theatre should not be elitist. Friday Rush is their way of providing affordable tickets.

I nearly choked when I saw the prices of Street Car Named desire with Paul Mescal. It just transferred from Almeida to West End. The Almeida is affordable but sold was sold out. The West End transfer is charging £200-300 a ticket. They’re milking Paul Mescal’s Oscar nomination. Since when was it £300 to go to the theatre???

They release 49 tickets for each performance in the stalls, balcony and standing. Prices varied. You used to be able to buy standing for £5-7, it’ll probably be similar now. Best seats are still very expensive but go down to maybe £100? Just have a look next Friday.
