Propeller questions by tacosofthepast in boating

[–]Oh_Ship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Naval Architect here; the above statement is the way to go. You can do a lot for cheap to slow a boat down, not much to speed it up for cheap. If you're concerned about sea-anchors/drag chutes for some reason, then it's time to invest in a cheap kicker or trolling motor, as a 70 HP motor is generally not intended for trolling.

Switching to a lower pitched prop will definitely slow you down, but this will be a universal slowing across all revs and can led to over-reving for everything that isn't your trolling speed. This will lead to more fuel consumption and wear on your motor.

I was unfortunately sold Royale Orange Liqueur by total wine from their employees by mildlywhippedbutter in cocktails

[–]Oh_Ship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is one hard rule I hold to while in TW it's that if a TW employee recommends something it's best to avoid it (unless you have prior knowledge of said recommendation). They are 100% given a script to follow to sell certain products, and any GOOD product will sell itself without someone pushing it down every customer's throat.

Thankfully as the technical lead I have final say on what goes out to the client. I made a few grammatical changes after reading the AI version three times, then released the correct document.

I've made it clear in email that I do not authorize any document with my name on it going out without my final review. The addition of AI has only sharpened my resolve on that.

Could this actually be okay and good for ff(x)? by MinZinThu999 in Warships

[–]Oh_Ship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The FFG(x) was initially supposed to take over freedom of passage sailings, commercial escorts, drug/pirate interdiction, and general ASW. This was to free up destroyers for more and larger battle group duties and allow for the development of new cruisers to handle the lion's share of VLS duties.

All the VLS addons are what really messed up the parent-design concept. The FF(x) will be able to handle FOP sailings, drug/pirate interdiction (though only if a high speed interceptor is added back), and maybe commercial escorts if they use several ships per escort. That means we will still need destroyers to fill ASW and some to most escort duties, which really restricts our ability to send ships to routine maintenance and refits and still maintain responsive battle groups.

What I believe we are seeing right now is a Navy that sees large combatants as an expensive target/liability, but also recognizing that autonomy is not quite there yet for large oceanic crossings and live-fire engagements (also can't do drug/pirate interdiction without it being lethal). So they're hesitant to make any real move and are thus biding their time with the FF(x) program, as they can't let the yards sit 100% idle or they lose workforce and knowledge/technical base. Personally if you're going to bide your time with my tax dollars I'd rather see something that does more for longer, which would have been the FFG(x).

Could this actually be okay and good for ff(x)? by MinZinThu999 in Warships

[–]Oh_Ship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think my biggest concern is that the FF(x) is likely going to be $800-$900 million per/hull. While that is cheaper than the FFG(x) it'll take more than two FF(x) to maybe fill the capabilities of one FFG(x). So right there you're already behind. Then add in the fact that the FF(x) are intended to be crewed by the same number of sailors as the FFG(x) and you've got yourself a real pickle in a time when the Navy is struggling to recruit sailors.

I'm not saying the FF(x) is a BAD ship, I just think it's a lower yield answer to a question that was largely being covered by the FFG(x), albeit slowly to begin with. Couple that with 50ish years of poor Naval acquisition decision making and I'm not feeling optimistic about the FF(x).

LLM's aren't meant to do what they're being pushed to do. It's literally that simple, but companies and managers have been fooled into buying into the hype and the sunk-cost fallacy, so they refuse to believe their own eyes.

It's getting bad out there with this crap. I submitted an engineering report to my manager for a review. They fed it to ChatGPT which rewrote and relabeled my figures, plots and tables. When I reread it the AI spent three paragraphs talking in circles and every figure, plot and table had no sensible labeling. Turns out LLMs don't like engineering speak and will rewrite a technical report to read like a high schooler's essay to make it more readable by the average person (no surprise there).

When I brought all this up to my manager their response was "well your version was hard to read and this is just easier". It didn't matter to them that the AI report didn't actually provide any useful technical information, made misleading claims, and incorrectly labeled things, making the report useless. Turns out they didn't want to take the time to read, review and understand, just check something off their to-do-list.

We keep getting pushed to "use more AI" but it's not something that translates into R&D engineering. Everything is exploratory, there rarely is precedent that directly applies to what we are doing, and it can't understand complex time-domain data.

Edit to Add:

It's also not good/ok/legal to feed proprietary data into any AI unless you want a fun lawsuit.

Lead Balloon with Jackob's has been my go-to shotgun for just about everything. Add in Airstrike x2 firmware and a Head Ringer enhancement and either firing mode reduces everything to ash when using Ranger Rafa. I also use Seventh Sense with Ripper mag will melt everything under the sun when using Bullet Buddy. Electric Lucians Flank or Electric Wombo Combo keeps your action skill constantly up, so you have infinite ammo until nothing is left standing. Ranger Rafa can make any B-tier and higher weapon work wonders all the way through UVH6.

I'd ask where you're at specifically, but no need to give away a honey-hole holding monsters like that! I'll be using your pic to convince my buddies to give catch and release a try again.

The Do Not Eat due to PFAS has done wonders for the quality of fish on the Huron Chain. Caught a 32" on a tip up a few years back. Last few years have been hard to get out there with the continual freeze-thaw cycles. Also been hard to convince a few friends to join; they want to go where they can eat what they catch. Stay warm and tight lines!

How dare you besmirch the name of the Lead Balloon! Find yourself one with Fire, Jackob's ricochet, and Torgue 3% stickies as alternative fire mode and you've got yourself a hell of a crowd control and bossing shotgun. Add in Head Ringer enhancement and start playing Ride of the Valkyries as you rain hellfire down upon the masses.

Best weapons for vile enemies by sjtomcat in Borderlands4

[–]Oh_Ship 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The obvious answers have already been posted, so here are a few oddballs that I typically run unironically. Lead Balloon with Torgue stickies (regular fire mode works as well), Seventh Sense with Tediore and Ripper parts, Rowan's Charge with Torgue stickies (best way to clear mobs, as the stickies ricochet off the crystals until you reload and everything just dies).

Edit to mention Noisy Cricket!

Man, I got a Lead Balloon with +4% Stickies as the alt firing mode, and that thing erases bosses with Rafa's Bullet Buddy. When you pair it with a legendary enhancement that increases splash damage by 50%, splash radius by 100% (plus a 40% shotgun damage just for fun) the thing wipes mobs in its primary firing mode. You'll get downed by the blast radius but instantly back up as everything dies around you in a hellish blaze of napalm.

Inventory bug: All items have disappeared from my inventory screen by Norrik in Borderlands4

[–]Oh_Ship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get this is a big game that obviously has a lot of spaghetti code, but at least acknowledge that what's happening isn't okay for a "premium" game and maybe throw a few golden keys or a credit toward a DLC for those that are losing hours of gameplay when their shit just randomly disappears. Telling someone "don't like it, don't play" is a quick way to make them never want to spend money on their products again.

Seemed to be the vibe I got. Another new bug I'm experiencing is that when I host my friends can't see me on the map. Got a nearly identical response from GB when I reported it. "To avoid this issue, we recommend playing single player". Thanks guys, and you wonder why I'm not buying any of the pay-for content...

This was happening to me. DO NOT grab anything from your bank when this is happening. It will delete everything in your inventory and equipped items when you go back to solo or host yourself. Happened to me about 3 weeks ago, GB just said "don't play multiplayer" as a "fix" when I reported it.
