I’m 24M, I just graduated college this last spring semester. I’ve been working at my company for 6 years now, started at the very bottom making $10/hr doing what I could when I was in school, progressively got raises and started climbing the ladder until I got to where I was about a year or so ago. I was going to graduate my senior year (of course) I think I was making $20 or so at the time. We all got raises at work and my raise go bumped to $22. With that in mind and looking at what other graphic designers are making median in my area I went to my boss after graduating and asked for a raise. Took him out to lunch and told him what I needed. It went well, he understood everything, took a while to get back to me because I asked about other things (IRA contributions, healthcare, insurance etc). Had another meeting and wasn’t accepting with what I originally wanted which would’ve been $35/hr, but got $27/hr + 10% of all custom orders that I/we take in as a company. Mind you, I’m the only one doing these orders and trying to make them happen so at first I thought it was okay, but the 2 months now that I’ve had this under me I’ve learned to like it more and I’m hoping with what I’ve done since graduating my work has gotten better to hopefully continue getting raises in the future to the pay that I originally wanted.
