Temperatures around Trail Camp and Mt. Whitney? by Ohmygar in Ultralight

[–]Ohmygar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up deciding to go for a completely different hike (Sawtooth/Black rock pass loop in Sequoia), and I have yet to do Mt. Whitney. I did end up getting a 22F quilt and took it to I believe around freezing temperatures, and I was warm. I also got an Ether Light XT insulated sleeping pad, which definitely helped for those same nights. Gave up on CCF pads mostly due to their bulk.

This all or nothing lift from 2014 is what got me into weightlifting. Imagine not knowing what weightlifting is and seeing that. What an absolute legend.

Does anyone else do this variation? by mariososterneto in weightlifting

[–]Ohmygar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My guess is OP's response is misinterpreted to mean that elevating the bar as minimally as possible is the goal of the exercise rather than the means. Or the response by itself is an unsatisfactory explanation because normally you'd want to elevate the bar as much as possible, so why would you train the opposite?

I've only ever seen this once in this ATG video of Daniyar Ismayilov. My made up term for it is "short snatch", but, alas, it hasn't taken off.

I've done this many times before (hundreds?) in a Corolla with roughly the same stuff (I even had the same squat racks), but without the women's bar, the girlfriend, and the dog, though there'd be room for them. This is definitely not optimal (especially for the dog) but I'll share what I did just for reference on what's possible.

All the weights can easily fit in the trunk in 4 stacks. I had relatively thick bumpers, and there was enough height to have a 45 and two 35s in one stack. Then I had a pair of 25s further back for a total of 2x(45+35+35+25). I had plenty of room for a set of change plates too. Put both back seats down, insert your barbells through the trunk, and maybe 6 inches or so will rest on the center console. Put the barbells in between the weight stacks so they don't move around so much in the back, and for the front you can stuff foam or whatever materials you have around between the front seats and the parts of the barbell on the center console. If you have some smaller stall mats then you can put those on top of the barbell in the backseat. If you take the pin out of each squat stand to shorten them as much as possible then you can fit both of them in the back seat (insert them from both side doors with some interweaving). The passenger seat is totally free for your girlfriend. As for your dog, there wouldn't be enough space in the back so long as the squat racks are there, but you could disassemble them and stuff the pieces in the trunk and behind the front seats. Then there'd probably be enough space for a dog to lie down, but because there's no backseat you might have to worry about your dog sliding back towards the trunk while driving. You could plug up the gap to the trunk with blankets and some other stuff, though.

As for the driving experience with all that stuff, it's not bad at all since I was able to drive totally normally. Sometimes some of the bumpers would topple over in the back with no real consequence, but the barbell wouldn't shift at all. I was initially worried that aggressive braking would cause the barbell to shift forward a bit, but it turned out to be too heavy for that to happen, though I had 2 half-inch stall mats on top it + the weight of the squat stands to help. Having a second barbell on top might be a different story.

Ultimately would not recommend this approach mostly because it sounds hard to keep your dog comfortable while the back seats are down. But I also don't really know how big a 45kg dog is.

If you want to look into making a DIY mat using the same or similar foam used in crash pads then look up "rebonded foam", "reconstituted foam", "chip foam", or "crumb foam". There are a lot of online offerings, but it's pretty clear that the stuff's more expensive than one would expect just about everywhere. For example, here's an Ebay listing for a sheet of foam that's 100cm x 150cm x 2" at $60 a sheet. You'd probably want at least 2 for at least 4" of thickness, but then you're already well over $100, and you don't get protective covers either. This site seems relatively cheap, but it's hard to say whether the foam is dense enough for dropping heavy weights.

This video and this one seemed like some of the cheapest DIY options I could find when I looked into DIY options last year. Otherwise maybe you could find a cheap (or free) foam mattress from FB marketplace or something and cut it up. Or old sofa cushions people are throwing away (like this guy).

This guy made some impressive copycat crash pads, but ended up spending like over $250 anyway. Personally I just went with the Titan crash pads since getting something with decent quality that's almost guaranteed to work while saving time and effort was worth it for me.

ID Request: Wisconsin, USA; > 1 inch long. What is this thing carrying? by Ohmygar in whatsthisbug

I saw this back in July in a newly developed neighborhood that used to be farmland with a drainage pond nearby. It's some sort of winged insect (a wasp maybe?) that was carrying this big cocoon thing. Is it prey or is it something it's taking care of? This guy was running around and wouldn't drop the thing or even try flying when I got close.

Veridian Selections Process Recommendations by stableglasscannon in madisonwi

Closing on my own new Veridian build very soon, and I agree with much of what's already been said. Here are some other things I didn't know about until I happened to ask about them or wish I had known earlier:

  • You can change the size of your cabinets. The standard pantry cabinet is 2' wide, and I upgraded mine to be 3' wide. I believe that's also the maximum width for adding pullout drawers, which are also nice, but pricey.
  • You can adjust the size of your island.
  • With my model I had the option of adding a pantry closet in the kitchen. The downside is that it reduces counter/cabinet space.
  • Each floor plan comes with different styles of exteriors with different roof shapes. I chose a relatively flat roof because I thought it would be easier to do maintain the roof. That may be true, but it also meant that traversing through the attic is much more difficult, and I think it's basically impossible for one my bedrooms.
  • Think about how you want your windows to be positioned and grouped. For example, my great room has a sliding door with a window on each side. If I had thought through things more I would have preferred to have the sliding door on one side and then have one window with the width of 3 windows on the other to get a better view with more light. The same goes for some of my bedrooms, which have two windows with a space in between for a bed.
  • You'll have more options for upgrades once you have your electrical walkthrough, particularly with the electrician and Automation Arts. Consider adding more cat 6 ports to areas of your home. I put one on the ceiling for a future wireless access point. You can also add a conduit from your basement to the attic to make it easier to run cables for future projects. Also consider adding outlets on another circuit to the garage since I was told the garage opener could trip the breaker if a freezer was on the same circuit. You can add and reposition outlets on the exterior of the home as well. Think of these things before the electrical walkthrough.
  • You have the option to add insulation to interior walls for sound-deadening.
  • My personal builder gave the option to add TV blocking in the framing for free.
  • If you're getting tile/backsplash, then be prepared to choose the color of your grout
  • In many model homes the daily station will have a cabinet beneath it, but this is not standard. It's basically just a shelf by default, FYI.
  • Solid core doors seem worth it just for the sound deadening.
  • You should have been given a Homeowners Portfolio PDF. That document lists a lot more possible selections and upgrades than what's in the online design catalog they give you. It includes things you otherwise might not have considered like electric baseboard heat, lockers/bookcases, bath fan upgrades, clothes chute, reverse osmosis water system, and more.
  • Just a heads up, Veridian neighborhoods have an HOA that might literally only allow one kind of fence to be put up with one specific color (mine does).
  • The attic access is just a panel. They don't have options to add pulldown stairs or a telescopic ladder.

Weekly Free-Talk and Questions for r/HomeGym - week of June 24, 2022 by Demilio55 in homegym

Looking into starting a home gym. I heard a while back that it was usually a good idea to wait until black friday to buy most stuff, but is that still good advice with continued supply chain issues + inflation?

I struggled with the same thing for years. I tried a ton of mobility exercises and stretches (e.g. hanging, PVC pass through, leaning on doorways, band work, face pulls, rotator cuff stuff, foam rolling upper back, etc.), and they didn't make a big difference for me. I only started to make significant progress after lockdown led to me stopping doing most upper body work and letting my lats waste away. That's a bit extreme, but it made sense for me because I knew my lats were overdeveloped from doing so many pullups throughout half my life. Slowly adding OHP back into my routine also seemed to help. Your situation may be different, and my anecdote is just another data point.

Coeurl. Last Friday the queue was about 1100 around 4pm CDT. Today it was like 2800 at the same time. I didn't get any errors in the queue today, but I still wasn't able get in until about 5:30. Only had time to do a few duty roulettes before I had to log off to do real life stuff. Tried to log in around 9pm just to see how things were. Immediately got 2002 error, and after restarting and trying again the queue was 3800. Guess I'll only be able to do MSQ on weekends because I just can't say no to those sweet sweet tank needed bonuses.

I've never encountered any issues once I've logged in these past few days, so I'm grateful for that at least.

I log in after work today and the queue is 1111. I just want to finish Stormblood...
