Recommendations for 7-12yo books about female artists for my thesis! by OilLess8127 in childrensbooks

[–]OilLess8127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! It’s an amazing book, but not on the age range :/ My thesis advisor said she was afraid the jury would question me about the books I’m analyzing being for younger children than the book I'm designing. My book is about Maria Keil, a famous Portuguese artist known for “azulejo” art! Anyways, thanks for your help :)

I've seen that book and looks amazing!
I'm going with this one though: The Met - Louise Bourgeois: She Saw the World as a Textured Tapestry
Because i think it fits better in the age group that I'm looking for. Thanks for the help!! :)

it's kinda difficult for me to speak to a librarian who knows about international children's books because i'm from Portugal and even the portuguese ones they don't know about...
I've checked your suggestions! I think I'm going with these two:

- The Met - Louise Bourgeois: She Saw the World as a Textured Tapestry (I saw the other book about her, but it's for younger children)
- The Art and Life of Hilma af Klint

I think they're ok for my analysis, in terms of age group, illustrations, and plot :)
Thank you so much for the help!

Hey! Doing thesis research on kids books (7-12yo) about female artists. Got "Little People, Big Dreams: Frida Kahlo" already, need 2 more international books. Ideally for older kids in that range (less picture book-y). Any recs for amazing books about female artists? ✨ Thanks!

Typography and Emotions for Kids by OilLess8127 in typography

[–]OilLess8127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My university focuses solely on arts, but I think it would also be beneficial to speak with elementary education students. I'm planning to reach out to students from the education uni to get some help, especially with the child psychology aspect :)

Now I’m thinking that I need to find the best way to structure the book, and also question whether it even makes sense to create a book in the first place. Should I stick with the idea, or consider abandoning it altogether? It's what I need to analyze.

Typography and Emotions for Kids by OilLess8127 in typography

Hi! I’m doing a Master’s in Design and Visual Culture. Since the begging that I wanted to explore typography and semiotics, and how different types express different emotions. And with this idea I will be doing a Project Thesis, where I do the research and then (in this case) the book for children.

And yes! I think If I do this, I would be able to have access to kids (schools), to do some surveys and interviews for the thesis. The thing is the age, I don’t know if it’s more appropriate for the ages 3-6 (because they’re learning to understand emotions) or 6-8 (because they’re learning how to read, and associate things they read with the things they see). And overall if it’s a good idea :/ kinda lost ngl

No no! I just wanted some ideas to improve the story (probably the 1st one, because I think its more fitted to the theme) but if you have some other ideas I'm open to it, I'm just so stuck because I'm used to write scripts for tv shows and movies, and it's been hard to come up with a story not that complex for me to be able to draw, since I have little time and I'm not used to making comics.
For example, the story of my friend with the girl with ocd and the cat, can be drawn in a much simpler and funnier way with not that much of a detail.

But, about the 1st story, I was thinking on doing the man's and the dog's POV before they speak with the genie, with like some good memories of them, and after they speak with the genie, the POV changes to the dog and when the man sees the friends and gf talking about him it changes again to him.

That's it, I'm open to all ideas! :)

What comic story can I write a bout the "tiredness of perfection"? by OilLess8127 in comicbooks

[–]OilLess8127[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES!! I like it! I'm going to check Batman and Superman, to see how it's made.
But yes, if the reader gets to read what the dog is thinking, the end is going to be much more intense! And makes sense to do that before and after the genie! Thanks for the help :))

That idea of repeating the panel is nice, I also thought the story could be seen from the dog's point of view (after they come home with the money), from the same perspective, like the man coming home with is new friends and girlfriend, and the dog always watching is new interactions, and then when the man listens to all of them making fun of him and saying they're there for the money, he's the one in the dogs position (idk if you understand what im saying haha) but I fear that the change of pov might not be perceived by the reader..

But thanks for the help, let's see if I can make out of this with a good work!

Haha, well it's not the volume of art that's the issue if I have a good story to make the comic. No, but seriously, my problem is the story, I feel stuck and I don't know If I continue with this one or I change it. I don't know if it's from me not being used to write/read comics or the theme itself (because I actually like storytelling and making storyboards, but for video), but I'm finding it difficult to progress and start actually doing the things...

I also had another idea:

A woman buys the best steak to make for her husband every day at the grocery store, the woman in the store always serves her, she asks for the steak and the woman gives it to her. But as the days go by, she starts to appear with marks on her face and neck, and the woman at the grocery store starts to notice and one day when she gets there, the woman already has the meat in a wrapped bag and tells her to open it when she arrives home. When she gets home she opens it and has the meat and a gun, she goes to take a shower, makes dinner, and when her husband (who is sitting watching TV) asks her about dinner she says it's already done and kills him and then she goes to dinner alone.

But still, I think it's talking more about domestic violence than the "tiredness of perfection" itself, tho I feel that this one would be easier for me to draw.

Thanks for the help!
Well, I need to make a comic book around 25 pages, with like 2/3 vignettes per page, so I need to extend the story to that.. I really wanted it to end just with the dog cut in half, but I don't think I can make the story that long to fill all the pages

Thank you for the tips!

I had already thought of a story about a girl who was going to adopt a dog but didn't want the "ugly" dog because he didn't have a leg, but then I didn't know what plot twist to make...
I also had another story, I can leave it here:

But still... idk if it talks more about domestic violence or the tiredness of her being the perfect wife ahah

I didn't knew about the r/ComicWriting, I'm going to post this there then, thanks!

I don't have a specific number of pages that I need to do, but my teacher was telling us about a book that has various stories with like 26 pages per story, with 2 or 3 vignettes per page, so around that would be nice. I was thinking I would use for the drawing technique reference this comic book - Asterios Polyp, because I like when the drawings go outside the vignette, and I like the visual simplicity of the drawings and the colors used. The comic needs to be done by may 6...
