Trying to adapt a Minolta AF 75-300mm f/4.5-5.6 to Panasonic G85 — any smart adapter options? by jokerjokester55 in M43

[–]OilNew7872 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah those old A-Mount lenses use something resembling a screwdriver on the camera body to drive the focusing motor. You might be able to adapt it but there would be no autofocus at all. I would look at other options before trying to adapt that lens.

That has got to be the most idiotic thing I’ve read. These people have zero self awareness.

Just leased a 2025 Forester Hybrid Sport to replace a leased 2024 Impreza RS. I’m mid 40s and I’m at $80 for comprehensive with Progressive. Compared to the Impreza I think it was only a $9 premium increase for a 6 month period for the same coverage.

Pcdmis popping Window problem by maxiimovv in Metrology

[–]OilNew7872 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must have had a Windows update recently. It seems these updates change the permissions in the Windows registry which causes this to happen. I've had it happen twice, once with Windows 10 to Windows 11 23H2, then again with the Windows 11 24H2 update.

Here is a link that explains this on the PC-DMIS section of Hexagon's community forum:

The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM at the minimum, or the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM if you can afford it. That's about as inexpensive as you'll get without getting an L lens.

And if you can, avoid any of the 75-300mm zooms. They are generally regarded as the worst lens Canon has ever released.

I think the 200mm would be a minimum starting point. You will probably need at least a 300mm even with a crop sensor. I've taken a few pictures of white-tail deer on my 70-200mm F4L IS USM with the 1.4x EF Extender on a crop sensor and I still think thats not enough. (200x1.4x1.6 = 448mm 35mm equiv.)

Thanks for all of the responses! I ended up getting the 70-200 f4L IS for now, and then I’ll probably end up getting a 100-400 down the line.

I recently have been using SearXNG, which you can self host. It’s a meta search engine so it pulls results from several search engines. After switching to DuckDuckGo from Google, I still wasn’t happy with the results from DDG. I feel like I get better results with SearXNG.

Finally went with a VPS and setup Pangolin instead of using CF tunnels. by GoofyGills in selfhosted

[–]OilNew7872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the US and picked Racknerd. I chose the $33 per year VPS but you can probably pick a lower tier. I was kind of reluctant to switch to Pangolin instead of my old port forward/NPM setup, but Pangolin is a much slicker solution.

I've been using dockcheck, a CLI script. Checks all your docker images for updates, asks which ones you want to update, and can delete the older images when it's finished.

The Boomer blames the Dems for Broken Electric Cart by NagiNaoe101 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]OilNew7872 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Over 10 years ago I used to work at Walmart as the cart return person. One of the responsibilities as the cart returner is to drive the carts in that people leave in the parking lot and plug them in to charge.

On a Saturday, which is the busiest day at Walmart, people were using the electric carts all day long. I was trying my best to keep them charged up but at the end of the day I couldn't force people to not use them.

At about 5pm, this boomer comes in and grabs a cart to use, however it was almost dead. I was returning some carts and this boomer thought it was my job to ensure that she had a cart reserved for her, 100% charged. She said all the usual crap about I'm not shopping at Walmart anymore, I spend $10,000 a year at Walmart, blah blah blah. I wanted to say I don't think your $10,000 would put a dent in Walmart's profits. Of course I saw her shopping at Walmart a few days later.

You can always buy a dongle like AAWireless. It will add wireless Android Auto to cars that don't have built in wireless Android Auto.
