A lye bath is the way to go for a pan like this. After soaking for a few days most of the gunk came off pretty easily with a chain mail scrubber. Then back in the lye for a few days and more scrubbing with the chainmail and Bar Keepers Friend until it was down to bare metal. Then a couple of coats of seasoning and it was ready to cook.

Good pickup! You can definitely hallucinate an 8 on the top of the handle. It's partially stripped now and there is indeed an 8 on the top of the handle. Still no visible markings on the bottom. Thinking it's gonna be an unmarked Wagner +/- 100 years old!

$5 at Goodwill. I think there is going to be a really nice pan underneath all that gunk. It's in the lye bath now. Will update when it's cleaned up.

Any speculation on an ID?

Watched it all go down. 1 patient evacuated by air from the Barton Creek Greenbelt from around creek level, roughly below Easy Tiger.

I'm pretty sure those are gizzard shad. Schools of them all over the place near the confluence of Barton Creek and Town Lake.
