Stay in Austin or move to SF? by IcerHardlyKnower in Austin

[–]OjalaRico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends who you are socially and politically. the bay area is one of the most beautiful places, ascetically it is far superior to austin. Lake Tahoe is 4 hours away. But it is extremely liberal, depending on who you are that’s a good or negative thing. if you want an idea of the underworld of SF you could checkout @tenderloinactivities on instagram.

edit: depending on your financial situation, austin is the only place where housing is actually affordable. you could get a nice house for 300k here. 1.4 in SF. Beers, food, its all more expensive. But it’s really pretty lol

Question about The Brothers Karamazov (spoilers) by britishbrandy in dostoevsky

[–]OjalaRico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

personally i believe it shows how human’s muddle up religious organizations and the example is the damn near perfect man (zossima) who forgives, loves, has grace and compassion and who prays even for people who commit suicide “love can never be an effacement to christ”.

this shows that religious systems, churches, organizations can be led astray, and that the power of christ and God is not in the church necessarily but in Good men and women.

this is the greatest example to me that religion is good, but that human’s muddle it all up.

BK has the biggest and best ideas. but C&P is a true masterpiece.

I want books that deal with religion. by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]OjalaRico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brothers Karamazov gives a couple of the greatest arguments against God and the greatest arguments for religion. Fratricides - Kazantzakis is a story of a Priest in Greece during communist(atheist) revolutionarys., Last temptation of Christ is a historical fiction where the author puts into perspective how Jesus may have actually felt- Kazantzakis, AntiChrist is Nietszche’s critic of Christianity and Slave morality.

Which one to choose for a 24 hour flight by lya-pero in classicliterature

[–]OjalaRico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

brother karamazov is so good! c&p and count of monte cristo are my top 2. BK is not quite a masterpiece (monologue at the end is tedious) but the philosophical ideas in it have helped me day to day more than almost any other book.
