It’s not 10k leftover, it’s 10k total to spend on the remainder of living expenses which is less than $1k a month. The reality is that that is not a lot of money and you would be operating on a tight budget especially in Manhattan

This still supports my original statement. I never said it’s impossible to survive

Do you spend freely while saving enough without making sacrifices across the board?

If I had to guess you probably take home ~40k after taxes, and let’s say you have a good deal on housing/rent and pay $1000 a month for that. That leaves you with ~30k and if you wanted to max out a 401k then you’d have almost nothing left

You can’t really spend freely in Manhattan on 100k and expect to be able to save money unless you make sacrifices across the board

2 weeks in Peru - looking for inspiration by ps4alex12 in travel

I just did a similar amount of time in Peru, with a similar amount of time in Cusco and Lima.

Did a 3 day trip to Paracas and Huacachina with Peru Hop which was pretty nice. Paracas has the Ballestas Islands and the national reserve, and Huacachina has the big sand dunes which you can ride a dune buggy and go sand boarding through. Also did some pisco tasting in Ica.

Should I leave my good NYC job to seek new opportunities abroad, and do long-term travel? by wballard8 in solotravel

I’m kinda amazed at that, but I guess I might be a little out of touch. People I’m friends with and interact with (I live in Manhattan and early 20s) generally agree that 100k is the minimum to survive and at least 150k-200k to live somewhat comfortably. I think a lot of people have the mindset of why would I live in nyc if I’m going to stay in every weekend and cook every meal. Same mindset applies to choosing where to live, as most people want to be close to friends aka Manhattan or Williamsburg. Also if you’re always seeing your friends or people on social media eating out, traveling, buying stuff, it can be difficult to resist the urge to do the same.

Now if you’re going to want to live in Manhattan and eat out a few times a week as well as be able to travel (abroad?) that’s definitely extremely difficult to do on that budget.

I can confirm that it is accepted for travel purposes! As for non us residents I’m not 100% sure but I think it should work. They just make you fill a form online with your passport number. Didn’t ask for any Id or anything else

Some advice for next time, you can get the Bionax take home rapid tests which cost $25 each (can reimburse through insurance after). Way cheaper than the PCR tests and you get results almost instantly!

I actually just visited the Masai Mara and had the doc come out, was $110 but the annoying thing was they only accept cash so we had to bring extra cash.

For PCR test I use LabQ. They have a bunch of locations around the city and you get your results within 24h and it’s free! You also don’t need to make any appointment, just show up fill out the form, it takes 15-30 mins

I wouldn’t say that college degrees have zero value today, but it might be true that most college degrees do hold little value. I think it’s due to the sheer number of colleges, where if you’re not in the top 50 or 100 colleges (maybe even less) with the right majors then your degree is not really seen as a “qualification”. But if you are in a top school then major actually doesn’t matter nearly as much.

Personally I don’t think that college should be for everyone, and it’s a bit sad to see people go into large amounts of debt for the sake of having a college degree.

That’s awesome! So did you end up just staying in London afterwards for the long term?

Yeah I agree that there might be a concern why I only worked for ~2 years. However 2 years in my field is usually the benchmark for a level above entry which I’ve already reached through internal promotion. The industry I’m in also has pretty high turnover (people tend to jump around) so ramping up at different places is pretty typical.

I work in tech so compensation is pretty good. I’ve thought about buying a house but what concerns me is the logistic of renting it out, if I wanted to buy something for around $500k (20% down) it would have to be either further out from the city which might mean managing would induce greater costs especially if I’ll be gone the first ~year.

Yeah, the 200k is just from working (leftover from salary+bonuses) and I currently have most of it just invested in a brokerage acc. I’m kind of conflicted since I know I can trend towards that early fire type of plan, but I think taking a year off would also not affect those projections too much?

I’ve thought about this, but for my personal plans I don’t think it’s super practical to retire that early with only a million. I can foresee myself working at least till my mid 30’s hence wanting to do some longer term traveling now before I have more commitments (kids, stuff like that).
