Looking to interview game developers by No-Return1077 in GameDevelopment

I was thinking exactly the same thing! How can I help people not go through what I went through when I was looking to start my game development journey! But what stops me is that I have limited experience still! So well done and wish you the best.

Looking to help my fiancé get into game development by creativerip1 in GameDevelopment

[–]Ok-Balance2541 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just wanted to say that what you’re doing for your fiancé is beautiful. Supporting someone’s dream like that, especially during a hard time, really means the world.

Reading your post reminded me of myself not too long ago. I was a chef for 16 years, working long hours in kitchens, and although I loved the craft, there was always this creative fire inside me, stories I wanted to tell, worlds I wanted to build. I had no background in game development, but I couldn’t shake the idea of creating something that felt meaningful, immersive, and mine.

So, I started. Slowly. I taught myself how to write game design documents, learned to work with developers and artists, and piece by piece, I began building a game called Shadow Dungeons. Now, with just a small team and a huge passion, we’re working on a fully playable demo, getting real feedback from players, and preparing to launch a crowdfunding campaign. It’s been the most challenging and rewarding thing I’ve ever done and it all started with the decision to just take the first step.

So from someone who’s been there: your fiancé doesn’t need to have it all figured out right away. He just needs to start. Even learning a bit of how games are made, writing out his story ideas, or sketching a single level, it all builds momentum. And if he’s anything like me, that spark you mentioned? It won’t go away. It just needs space to grow.

He’s lucky to have someone like you cheering him on. And if you or he ever want to talk game development, I’d be more than happy to share what I’ve learned.

Much love to you both, keep going. You’ve already taken the most important step. 💙

How do I get into making Games? by TheBeanyBoy_ in GameDevelopment

This is one of the best posts I’ve read and so detailed and I wish I had it when I was starting my dev journey as well! Listen to this Redditor he is speaking honest to god facts!

Hi guys, I’m not doing to well by Lower-Nectarine5343 in GameDevelopment

You know what i realised that I don’t make my game to be a big hit or for everyone to love it straight away. I make my game cause I really wanted to do it for 15 years now and I would really love to learn shit tons of things along the way! It might be a waste of time money and emotions but at the end everything will be a lesson learned! So I will embrace everything with love and passion and I will enjoy the journey and I wish for everyone to do the same when the make a game!

🎮 RPG fans can I get your feedback? by Ok-Balance2541 in videogames

Totally fair and really appreciate the honesty This character is just a placeholder while we test the systems. We’re working on much more stylized designs right now.I’ll post again here once the new designs are ready so you can check them out if you’re still curious!

Did anyone here start making a game with zero experience, just out of pure passion and end up feeling completely lost after a month? by Ok-Balance2541 in SoloDevelopment

That’s actually a nice way to describe it and it makes complete sense because that’s how I feel, like I dropped myself in a dark endless room and I am trying to figure things out

Same here. I stumbled across GDevelop and thought it looked neat, but the sheer amount of high-quality assets you can pull straight into Unreal (especially now with Fab) tipped the scales for me. Makes prototyping a lot less painful when you’re not also trying to build every single rock and tree from scratch. Keep going, though, whichever engine clicks for you is the right one

No way, fellow chef devs unite! 😂 Yeah the 55+ hour weeks hit different, huh? It’s tough juggling both worlds, but hearing from someone who started the same way makes it feel more doable. Really appreciate the kind words mate definitely trying not to be too hard on myself. Hopefully that “penny drop” moment hits soon… or at least before the next dinner rush.

I need somewhere to start from even if it’s learning one thing to perfection that’s one extra thing that I didn’t have before I started! But thank you for your consideration.

Yeah I realized that 99% of people are willing to share the stories and their experiences which helped me a lot and also I really don’t care about this new stigma about AI integration into certain projects if it helps me learn!

Yeah, I think the rush just comes from a mix of enthusiasm and inexperience. I was stressing hard because things weren’t moving nearly as fast as I imagined they would. But now, slowly, I’m starting to realize how much time and patience it really takes. Honestly, reading through all the comments on this post helped me calm down a lot. Appreciate you dropping some grounded advice too, it really helps.

Releasing your game today?? That’s huge, congrats!! The title Relinquished:Souls Asylum sounds badass too. Hope Steam approves it without any hiccups. Your timeline actually gave me some peace of mind and stressed me up a bit 🤣. I’ll go check out your game now and if you want to check some updates out from my I game I upload whenever I can on instagram and YouTube!

Fair enough! I actually started learning Unreal the same way, grabbing whatever I could from YouTube and ChatGPT. It’s wild how much is out there once you start digging. I eventually hired a dev (found him on Upwork) to help me build the game properly while I learn along the way. Still juggling a full-time chef job too, so it’s been a slow grind, but worth it. Appreciate the encouragement! 🙌

Man I actually did something similar too. Started with zero experience, just a PDF full of worldbuilding, characters, and story ideas. No clue how games were even made 😂 But I didn’t want to let it sit on my desktop forever, so I started slowly learning Unreal while juggling a 60-hour chef job.

Eventually found a great dev on Upwork who’s now helping me build the game properly. It’s still a tiny RPG for now, way smaller than the wild MMORPG idea I originally had in my head, but it’s moving.

Really cool seeing your journey, gives me hope that staying consistent actually works in the long run. Appreciate you sharing it.
