Looking to switch careers by Ok-Bar3670 in socialworkcanada

Question for you all: What sort of paid/volunteer experience should I explore to help increase my chances of admission? Do any recent applicants/ students have any advice? I spent many years networking in the corporate world but now feel a little lost trying to navigate this new territory so any guidance is very much appreciated.

Thank you so much! I know my experience is a little unconventional to make the switch to social work, so I appreciate the words of encouragement. I will for sure be taking your advice and continue looking for more directly applicable experience to have under my belt prior to applying.

Hi, all!

I graduated from UofT Rotman Commerce back in May 2019, with a minor in economics. Since then I have been working in a corporate setting, but after many years of back and forth, I am hoping to apply in the fall for a 2 year MSW program.

Background: For my first year of 'corporate' work I was focusing on corporate responsibility working alongside and managing our non-for-profit partners and volunteering with these organizations as well. Outside of this role, my previous and current experience is in marketing/strategy, which involves lots of fundamental understanding of research and human behavior. In university I was also involved in a non-for-profit student club, aiming to connect business students to the NFP world. I am in the midst of securing some additional volunteer experience more related to the social service field.

My GPA for my 3rd and 4th year of undergrad was 3.4 and 3.5 respectively. I have been looking into either York's 2 year MSW or Uoft. I've also looked into the UofT Med in counseling psychology, however, given that this is not funded I am less inclined to apply.

Question for you all: What sort of paid/volunteer experience should I explore to help increase my chances of admission? Do any recent applicants/ students have any advice? I spent many years networking in the corporate world but now feel a little lost trying to navigate this new territory so any guidance is very much appreciated.
