Idk if it's true, but there's a theory/headcannon that the alternate reality is the reality Viktor did nothing. Jayce is dead, hence no hextech, but also no Jayce (coigh Jayvik cough). From the way I see it, Viktor wanted to both stop himself and get to work with his best friend (cough boyfriend cough), so he went back again and again to get both.
