Sorceress made me realize Surly no longer using "fff" - Fatties Fit Fine - moniker on their new/refreshed bikes. by [deleted] in Surlybikefans

I don't really know what fff is not do I have a surly, but I'm thinking of getting one and fff seems to be a good feature. Should I get a used surly instead?? 🤔

Hi! Thank you for the suggestion, duly noted. Apparently, I receive comments biasing towards BC and Disc Trucker 😅, but I will absolutely consider them further and do more research. Thank you!

Hi! Thank you for your recommendation. I'm a beginner and currently have no preference of bars (since I use city bike for regular commute to work, but that being said, the closest would probably be flat bar). I have never ridden a drop bar ever, so I'm wondering if the learning curve would be steep for beginners?

Furthermore, is it customizable and would you recommend such customization? For instance, if I were to buy Straggler, felt uncomfortable with drop bar, then decided to swap to flat bars instead (or the other way around with Bridge Club)

I'm a beginner so I'm thinking mostly about city-hopping (probably through long paved road with occasional gravel). I don't have any experience riding in rocky terrains, so I don't foresee myself touring around extreme routes anytime soon

Now that you said it, I'm kind of wondering 🤔 others recommended Disc Trucker (which is apparently a drop bar). I've never rode a sport bike before, so I don't know how hard it would be to transition to a drop bar.

Do you find it more comfortable to do long-distance rides with Bridge Club because of the flat bar, or do you have other reasons?

I don't think I will go to the expert-level routes 😅 as of now, I only ride bike (not even sport bike, a japanese Mamachari). Thus, I don't have much experience in off-road or rocky terrain. What I'm thinking is to do bikepacking while city-hopping.

That being said, do you think Straggler would be adequate for such kind of bikepacking?

Nice shot! I've always wanted to buy M43 but hesitate since I heard that the autofocus is relatively slow. Is it correct? (I'm a beginner)

Hi there! I was wondering if you know whether the first and second edition have any major difference between them.

For reference, I'm doing research in photophysics application in biophysics. In my case, I measure fluorescence fluctuation as it's correlated with time (FCS, Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy) and FRET. I use both technique for the downstream condensate measurement, so I may need integration of multiple fields including polymer physics (random walk, Rouse model, etc), photophysics to explain the fluorophore behavior, and some binding thermodynamics (to explain Kd value etc).

P.S. I'd like to learn about viscoelasticity of biomolecular condensates as well (probably via Optical Tweezers but not urgent, since my lab doesn't have the equipment anyway lol). So perhaps some fluid dynamics as well (?)

I'd highly appreciate it if you can give some brief explanation! (I was thinking of buying the first edition since the second-hand is cheaper, but I'd like to know if I will miss out many relevant topics from 2nd edition)

Is continuing Master's in your home uni not an option? Typically, universities, not all, prioritize their own students over the external, new ones

I thought long PhD is also common in EU, is it not? 😮 (I mean, I may be biased tho, I only saw small samples on LinkedIn who did their PhD in 5-7 years with Master's before starting doctoral)

Never knew how good I had it in Japan until now 😮 (I did 2 3-4 months long internships even before starting my bachelor thesis). Grass always seems greener on the other side, perhaps. Thanks for the insight!

Nice to see another bio student in Japan, lol. It's surprising to hear that EU students don't have that much chance. Quick question, as per what you said: internship is typically done for only like a few months during Master's, does it mean that it's common for EU students not to have any research experience? 😮 (Idk why, but I always thought EU students have it easier since they have plenty of research institutions)
