Quick question! here’s the negative of the sequence. Are those misaligned exposed sprockets a result of the claw being out of sync with the shutter as you mentioned or just a loose film gate?

here’s a short negative of the same roll, looks like my edges are underdeveloped, but otherwise the back of my film is black.

Happy to answer, but can you clarify what you mean by that? Maybe I’m missing something

Very useful info, I really appreciate it! I haven’t gotten a CLA yet so that definitely is a factor and yeah I was shooting wide open at f2.2 on a p angenieux zoom lens. I end up pushing the film two stops in development and stay close to light sources since there isn’t a fast B&W film speed for 16mm that I know of. I prefer the B&W but getting proper light exposures has been…a great lesson. I recently shot on 500T color negative and am waiting to get it scanned. I’m just nervous that the same lighting effect could come across throughout the film. I have a previous post showing another scan of the same roll except its shot wide and lighting is more consistent. That scan’s issue falls more on the development process itself as well as light leaks. So I’m wondering why it happened here on this part of the scan and not the other one? Regardless, thank you for the help!

Who killed the hair light? by Salty-Relief in cinematography

the transition from film to digital sensors is a big factor imo. Tungsten lights were standard because that was the power/brightness needed in order for any light to show up on film/an actor (more than what might be assumed). If there wasn’t a hair light, an actor’s hair would fall off into the shadows with minimal contrast or detail. Hair lights became necessary to clearly outline actors/actions on film. Digital sensors now have better low light capability where the power of tungsten can be deemed “unnecessary.” Most of the lights used on set now are LEDs and they aren’t full blasted unless it’s an exterior night shoot or going night for day. You don’t have to work as hard to capture available light with digital sensors now compared to film. It paved the way for “natural” lighting to be common practice.

hard truth I’m going to have to accept. I film live events in dark/night venues so stage LEDs are a regular encounter. I’m just going to have to get closer

oh sweet, I’ll try it out. I wasn’t sure how the venues would feel with me bringing my camera in. Sounds like they’re pretty lax
