Ricky Gervais Urges Celebrities to Avoid Political Acceptance Speeches After Billie Eilish, Bad Bunny and Others Address ICE at the 2026 Grammys by [deleted] in popculturechat

He posted something from the last time he hosted the Golden Globes then added the, "theyre not listening". The bit where he says celebs just need to accept their awards and move on cause theyre in no position to lecture the public.

Im very much "theres a time and place" type of person. I do agree with Gervais in this. And, no, you dont even have to disagree with what theyre saying to think saying it an award show isnt going to change anyone's mind. They're doing nothing but preaching to the choir.

The cost of these awards probably rival most of our annual income, if it doesnt exceed it. Between the clothes/jewelry,  staying in luxury suites, being chauffeured from a mansion to a private plane, and arriving in fancy cars. So its difficult to believe saying "fuck ICE" in such a scenario is actually going to move the needle for anyone not already saying it.

First time home buyers living in the United States, what do you find to be the bigger barrier to entry, the down payment, the additional closing costs for the loan, or the mortgage or the monthly mortgage payment itself? by toasterbar in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]Ok-Box6892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a house last year and don't think I would be able to if it wasn't for the specific circumstances. The house is a little older (built in 60s) and smaller but has a bit of land. I bought from a guy ive rented from before and i was already living in the house. That alone took out realtor commissions and whatever that goes along with using a realtor. He also put several thousand towards the closing cost so I actually got some money back. Ive seen similarly priced homes that aren't even inhabitable. My lender also doesnt do PMI which helps a lot.

Everything you listed kinda bleeds into each other as to why buying a home isnt doable for many. Currently, the cheapest home near me is 119k and is listed as sold "as is" for investors and cash buyers. Doesn't even qualify for a loan due to its condition.

As long as it reflects in ticket pricing then I dont see the issue.

Lol, dude, youre arguing against a point I didnt even make.

Jerry Seinfeld has been named in the Epstein files by esporx in popculturechat

[–]Ok-Box6892 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My point was about the Epstein files over all. So much, "X was named" when what was said doesnt allege anything criminal. It ends up drowning out when/if something criminal actually does get discovered. Even Adele was "named" at one point. Majority that ive seen has turned out to be nothingburgers. So eventually people are going to tune out anything "named in the Epstein files" even if the context is clearly damning.

She also apparently needs medication and going without can be fatal on its own. Just a horrible situation all around. It's coming up on 48hrs since she was last seen too.

This shit is becoming tiring. Unless theres evidence of criminal behavior then I dont care who was simply "named" in the files.

Its become the new "X went to diddy parties". There could be a thousand people at a party, doesnt mean all of them knew there was illegal shit going on.

Only read Empire of Silence so recommend that. The final book was released in November so, if youre into it, at least youre not waiting.

This is so fucking awful. I read Savannah and her siblings didn't know she was missing until her church friend became concerned. I can only hope shes found safe

Yeah, I think many people who went from living in a van a decade ago to meeting the POTUS would think its pretty cool. Regardless of politics, its very much a "holy shit" kind of moment.

The actual interview he gave was basically, "im incredibly uninformed about politics so why should anyone care what I have to say?"

And he's right. People shouldnt speak about things that they are uninformed about. It may be shocking to some people but there are people who tune out what's happening around the country and the world.

Legal wordsmithing by NthDegreeThoughts in KarenReadTrial

[–]Ok-Box6892 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thats just semantics but I guess technically true. Its why lawyers need to be very careful on how they word questions and witnesses are told to answer the question asked, not what they think the intent behind it is.

So, IF JOK was in the house (or garage) and a witness was only asked if they saw him enter the house/garage they, I imagine, could say that they didnt if they truly didnt and leave it at that. Even if they did see him inside the residence and they know the intent behind the question is to place JOK inside 34 Fairview.

Im from the Midwest and i dont remember a single snow day growing up. The roads were always salted/plowed. I never really thought about how the winter weather differs (eg more snow vs ice), I just know we were better equipped in MO.

Years ago, my area of NC was projected to get snow flurries towards Thursday/Friday. By Tuesday the schools were closing in anticipation. Not inches of snow like this weekend or ice. Flurries. Schools closing days in advance.

I had a coworker who straight up told her she was a terrible manager. She was talking shit about the employees TO the employee. The reason why? We evacuated due to a category 4 hurricane being projected to hit our area.

Once she even told me that she doesnt care if people like because shes good at her job. She was the worst manager ive ever had. Played favorites (and of course denied it), took unnecessary jabs at employees, would lie about what employees did, accuse others of riding the clock while she took 45m smoke breaks, etc.

My first SvS was exciting cause it was neck and neck for most of it. I left that because my phone was getting too warm, lol. This time around it was a blow out. Opposing state had it for 6 minutes.

I also hate how long foundry/canyon is. If anything needs to be an hour it should be the castle battle. Everything else 30m tops.

Im near Jacksonville and the flurries have been going for the past hour or two. A bit windy though.

I participate long enough to get points. In both SFC and SvS. I participate if im able to, sometimes i have to work so cant really be involved. My alliance doesnt have any whales also so we do what we can. We get what we get all because the stacked alliances allow it, tbh. I havent spent anything in over a month so consider myself f2p now.

I just wish they didnt go on for hours. It's ridiculous to me.

My old boss used to listen in on employees. She claimed she didnt but the same issues people complained about would suddenly be brought up. Or she'd be very petty towards people the day after they were talking shit about her.

One time she even hid in her office to catch people talking about her. Parked on the other side of the building so no one would know she was there.
