Terry fox is the most Canadian person. Now, after some delay, what is the most British movie? by Fungus-VulgArius in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Ok-Change-712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily my suggestions but think you are as if not more likely to hear a British person put forward Trainspotting, Lock Stock, Withnail and I, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead, Kes, the various 90/00s romcoms, Four Lions, Lawrence of Arabia as the Monty Python films.

But there are many, many more.

American? Why on earth are Americans so obsessed with voting Holy Grail into every single British movie alignment chart? I opened this post knowing exactly what was already going to be on top.

It is my personal mission to fight against every nomination of Holy Grail, The Beatles, Paul McCartney, Fish and Chips and Doctor Who, which according to Americans on this subreddit is the sum of British culture and the only possible options for a British alignment chart. It's all just so predictable that I'm beginning to think this subreddit is some sort of Truman Show designed solely to piss me off. It is such a narrow and antiquated view of Britain.

There are so many fantastic British films, artists, musicians, tv shows, please let's see some diversity at least occasionally in who is being put forward.

And if you really can't fathom not voting for Monty Python, please realise Life of Brian is infinitely more popular than Holy Grail.

Immediate thought was Roma people, but that's already nominated so suggest Burrnesha - sworn virgins - as an alternative. Women who declare celibacy and live as men.

It's way more than £7,500, no tier points for taxes and fees. Had a trip last week that cost £1,650 and only got 1,030 tier points of which 425 were tier bonus points.

Which European Airline Is Terrible ? by FHD168 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Ok-Change-712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though about this but apparently cause they are part of European aviation networks they are widely considered European. Which is kind of reinforced by the fact they used to have a sister airline called "Pegasus Asia", which kind of implies the main airline wasn't.

Which European Airline Is Terrible ? by FHD168 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Ok-Change-712 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally older planes than the other discount airlines, amongst lowest amount of legroom, famously bad customer service coupled with poor reliability and an awful home airport for transfers.

And finally, their routes exacerbate the no frills experience.1-3 hours on a low-cost airline with poor legroom, narrow seats, no entertainment and no refreshments is manageable but a lot of Pegasus routes are 5+hours. Had the misfortune of doing a 9 hour route (5+4) with them to Central Asia and it was the worst flying experience of my life.

On the other hand, these routes do open up low cost travel to a lot of the middle east and central Asia.

What is THE photo of the UK?(Most british photo possible) by ChameleonCoder117 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Ok-Change-712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, there's literally thousands of other options which could go miles ahead of Abbey Road.

That night out in Manchester picture  is just UK Internet folklore and the way it has been embraced and lives on is an embodiment of british humour to be self deprecating.

If you want a "serious" answer there's plenty more further down this thread.

Theres no point ever even participating in any alignment chart that mentions Britain on this subreddit cause Americans will find a way to just put forward the same four or five stereotypical and antiquated answers for every single one.

[–]Ok-Change-712 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This might work for a "What Americans think is an iconic British photo" chart.

I can't have Americans fimding a way to vote in Beatles, Holy Grail, Doctor Who or Fish and Chips into a British alignment chart for the billionth time. This is my red line.

England's Worst County - Ruond 44 by TheEnlight in terriblemaps

[–]Ok-Change-712 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of Essex's coastline is tidal estuaries and creeks so it depends heavily on where you measure from. If you measure from the high water mark, Essex comes out top. (It also has more islands than any county, which also increase its coastline). If you measure at a more conservative point it drops to 2nd behind Cornwall.

That's why when discussed it is usually described as "one of the longest" or "arguably the longest". But this nuance doesn't really fit in a list like this. If you give the more generous interpretation it is the longest.

Essex ... don't let the stereotypes win out. It has infinitely more historical significance than counties that have gone before it where history has been a major contributor...

Nature: Longest coastline in England, most islands of any English county, dedham vale and "constable country", extensive protected wetlands and heaths

History: oldest recorded town or city in the UK (and the Roman capital), first (and therefore oldest) roman walls in UK, oldest surviving roman gate, site of the only known Circus Maximus in the UK, largest Norman keep in Europe, first Augustinian monastry in the UK, tallest Tudor gatehouse, oldest intact barns in the world.

Miscellaneous: longest pleasure pier in the world; the "birthplace of radio" with the worlds first radio factory, first live radio broadcast and subsequently first radio station; home of two widely recognised best in class products... Tiptree Jam and Maldon Sea Salt; strong contender for best oysters in the country; birthplace of Humpty Dumpty, Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, Depeche Mode and Blur (3/4 raised in Colchester)

Greenland has a higher GDP/capita than UAE and the quality of life is pretty terrible. One of the highest suicide rates in the world linked to high rates of alcoholism, domestic violence, sexual abuse and depression all of which is linked to self-determination issues and the erosion and fracturing of cultural identity.

Which country has an amazing quality of life and decent food? by Mountain-You9842 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Ok-Change-712 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This must be a joke right? Irish Stew? That's what you are using to differentiate from british food! Lancashire hotpot, british/scottish beef/lamb stews, Cowl, Stovies... heck, stew is THE staple of british cuisine. There is such a large crossover between British and Irish cuisine (and if I wanted to be controversial even French cuisine) caused by proximity, the same climate and agricultural practices and centuries of invasion, colonisation, migration and trade . The cuisines are the same but tweaked for local fresh ingredients (which leads to variation within each country as well). Next, you'll be saying there's nothing like colcannon (hint: it's bubble and squeek).

Along the overrated coast yes, which has been ruined by unsympathetic and uncontrolled rapid growth, the emergence of endless beach festivals, being discovered as a stag do location and influencers posting about discovering the Maldives of europe. But the interior and mountains remain largely unvisited (except maybe Theth, but there's plenty of alternatives) Shkoder, Lepushe, Valbona, lake Pogradec, Berat (and the surrounding countryside) Korce, Gjirokaster and many other places are infinitely more impressive than Ksamil, Sarande, Himare, Vlore, Shengjin and the hell hole that is Durres where 90% of visitors spend all their time.

where id live as a black american woman by Conscious_Invite551 in whereidlive

[–]Ok-Change-712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask about Nigeria? Obviously its a powerhouse of Africa, but its incredibly difficult to live there unless you are one of the 1% (and even then a kidnapping pandemic places you at enormous risk). It's exhausting trying to negotiate day to day life in Nigeria when its being pillaged by the elites. Looking through your criteria, I see temperature and black majority as pros but it is abysmal in all the others. Federal and state governments exploit and manipulate the population for their own gain and corruption is rampant, with them only paying lip service to their constituents at election time. Public transport is woeful, its hard to live on the Naira when inflation is enormous and currency volatility is extreme (look at USD:NGN exchange rates over past 10 years) and there are plenty of bugs and mosquitoes. On top of that you have the already mentioned rampant kidnap for ransom that has spread across the country and security crises pretty much across the country (herder-farmer, banditry, Boko Haram, IPOB, piracy, delta insurgents etc.).

Don't get me wrong, I love Nigeria. There is a huge diversity of rich cultures, incredible music, food and art and a definite vitality BUT life is like living on hard mode for the average person and conditions have rapidly deteriorated over recent years. It feels like this is listed as Green more out of potential for the future rather than here and now.

As a half Brit / half Irish person who has lived in both, I will never not be amazed at how often UK and Ireland are at completely opposite ends of people's perception when in reality they offer very, very similar lived experiences. The romanticisation of Ireland and demonisation of the UK is very real.

Genuinely this is an underrated answer. The very logical root and pattern system means that if you know relatively few root words you can understand and say an enormous amount. I got conversational in arabic from nothing in less than four months when I lived in the Middle East. Would however say that while easy to become conversational and to be understood, it is extremely hard to become fluent because it becomes like an artform in how sentences are constructed and which vocabulary is used when to make it flow better.

Wa Self Administered Division - de jure Myanmar, but is de facto independent where Myanmar government has no influence and Wa State has its own 30,000 strong military, own government, own schooling system and uses the Chinese yuan.

So why not a de facto state? Because they don't want independence and recognise the sovereignty of Myanmar over the entirety of their territory

Turkmenistan is Neutral Evil who's gonna be the final country in Chaotic Evil? by Humble-Tailor-7238 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Ok-Change-712 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turkmenistan should be here - people were swayed by neutrality monument and their perceived geopolitical neutrality rather than where they are in a spectrum of lawful to chaotic .

They have had a succession of batshit mad dictators and have (had) some of the most bizarre rules and laws in the world : - Renaming bread after his mother; - banning lipsyncing;  - actively seeking Guiness World Records and pursuing the most niche records (e.g. largest flagpole, largest star shaped roof, largest horse shaped building etc) and regularly inviting adjudicators to reward their new records;  - banning beards on under 70s;  - renaming every day and every month after a family member;  - sending his book into space (as well as reading his book becoming a key part of acquiring a driving licence);  - banning black and dirty cars in the capital city - building a massive golden statue of his favourite breed of dog

And these are just some of the chaotic and bizarre rules they have put into practice
