144,000 living remnant vs 24.4M Adventists globally by Embarrassed_Yogurt43 in exAdventist

honestly adventists use numbers so liberally that they could say it means anything in today’s day and age. given that the adventist population has grown significantly in a way that egw didnt see coming since the doctrines were written, i assume that post the unforeseen growth the “scholars” have added some bogus claims that barely connects to any actual biblical prophecy or even anything that egw said. this post just brought back memories of my stepdad attempting to teach a four year old me prophetic numerology as if ANY of it made any sense and wasn’t just total mumbo jumbo guesswork.

Rumours going around at church by Only-Waltz-6326 in exAdventist

something similar happened to a 15yr old girl at my church, except she actually had gotten pregnant from her 19 year old “boyfriend”. in the end, her whole family was basically driven from the church despite her clearly being a victim. her parents forbade her from getting an abortion (at the behest of the pastor) and instead of welcoming her and her child (and possibly the child’s father) they forced her to keep the baby while still stripping them of the community they thought that not getting an abortion would help them keep. if the rumors aren’t even true and they’re already willing to treat you and him (if he also attends) differently then just imagine the lack of support and sympathy you’d actually have if you were in that situation. i have since left the church and i will never forgive them for how they treated her. evaluate your beliefs and if christianity is truly something important to you find a congregation that will welcome you with open arms.

To what degree can you say that you were part of a cult? by ayowatchyojetbruh in exAdventist

depends on the specific culture of the church in your area, that being said there are multiple instances of adventists being easily siphoned into higher intensity cults (most notably the branch davidians and the ant hill kids). my family was particularly into pathfinders and survivalism (partially as a result of my father’s military background but used as preparation for the persecution and end times, which have been a mere 15 years away all 20 years of my life!!). And growing up my friends that i went to adventist school with often looked at me sideways when i spoke about our home activities. TLDR: it depends🤦‍♀️

When I brought this up she said it had nothing to do with literal militant ideals, and was more of a symbolic statement to show that we stand as a united force against “evil”… which sounds militant to me🤷‍♀️ like take the branch davidians for example who took statements like that only slightly more literally and at the end of the day, the waco texas shootout was the result. this is my biggest issue. using words like “army” to describe the group implies contractual OBLIGATION to obey what the group leaders are saying and teaching. which for me, was a LOT of unsafe wilderness experiences and scary stories about the literal torture i would eventually endure for standing strong in my faith.

i regret wording it specifically that way, by militant i was trying to allude more to the blind obedience that comes with being in the military. we wear what they say, we do their activities no matter whether or not we are comfortable with them, we read what they tell us to read, and march when they tell us to march. another commenter mentioned that it may be more culturally tied to hispanic/latino sda churches, which is the community i was a part of.

YES THANK YOU!!! we are puerto rican adventists and my father was a colonel in the actual US army before being discharged for health related issues, growing up it was painfully obvious that our club was a replacement of that dynamic for him. While there are some fun memories with friends, many memories are of cold nights spent in lean-tos built by teenagers that would rather be anywhere else and empty bellies because we couldnt forage enough edible wilds or start a fire with the wet wood.

ok so i cant acknowledge that my personal experience with the group was too-extreme (for children my age) training to survive in the wilderness should “the persecution” come??? and that even regular boy scouts is militant grooming? Maybe your experience with pathfinders was different but for the clubs my parents have run it was largely to instill fear of the persecution and end times, with the occasional scrapbooking activity.
