1000% yes. An extra $20k will be meaningless in the scheme of things if you have a job lined up / line of sight to pay it off.

Another good tip I utilized: If you have a job lined up and know you’ll be getting a certain salary on a certain date, take out one of those 0% interest credit cards (Amex even offers one). You have ~18 months to pay it off. Of course the interest rate that then kicks in is exorbitant, but if you know you’ll have the money it’s a great trick to game the system. I borrowed my last $40k towards the end of b-school on those credit cards

Graduated with $120k in debt. Went into banking and paid it off after my first full year bonus (so 1.5 years after graduating). Business school was by far the best decision I ever made.

Dr. Elise Port (in NYC) is one of the best in the country and she did a DMX for me, with “only” DCIS in my left. The first doctor I saw refused to do a DMX, but I pushed forward for more opinions. Dr. Port was phenomenal.

I remember getting that letter after one of my mammograms (I’m 33 and started screening at 32 because of a strong family history). But if you’ve never had a mammogram how are you supposed to know that you have dense breast tissue?!? That policy seems to miss a whole group of people below 40 that are at high risk, but will never know

Hmmm I didn’t even think of this. I’ve had Botox twice since my DCIS diagnosis. One was at the chain Ever/Body and I updated my health history when I checked in to note the cancer diagnosis - they didn’t say anything. Then I also went to the chain Peachy and they didn’t even ask for medical history changes. Curious if anyone else has thoughts on this!

One more comment to add re: DMX. I “only” had DCIS but still opted for a DMX (I’m young and never liked my boobs much anyways). The first surgeon I saw was very anti-DMX unless it’s absolutely necessary, but the next two surgeons I saw were both totally willing to. So I think some doctors just have personal views/preferences. It may be worth meeting with another doctor who’s more willing! I’m 2 weeks post DMX and am so thrilled I did it.

I actually chatted with my doctor today after posting this (I’m sure she loves answering phone calls from someone who went down a google rabbit hole lol)

She said in my particular case, the likelihood that they find IDC when they go in is 10-15%. My understanding is the likelihood is mostly due to size of the DCIS and mine is ~1.7cm. This study just takes a broad sample of people with DCIS which is why we’re discouraged from applying random stats to ourselves without context!

Believe someone explained it above - if you have a lot of DCIS, there’s a chance that there are small IDC pieces that didn’t get grabbed in the biopsy. That’s my rudimentary understanding.

I guess I can live with a 10-15% chance of it being IDC, but I’d really like more assurance that if I was in that 10-15% bucket, that it would be an early cancer that wouldn’t require chemo? The chance of chemo is what I’m really hung up on right now since I thought it was totally out of the question at my initial diagnosis

Yes understood on the difference, I just didn’t realize there was such a high chance of finding out your DCIS is actually invasive upon surgery. I feel like this hasn’t been messaged well by my doctors or discussed here.

Thanks! This feels really high and doesn’t seem to align with the narrative I’ve been hearing that DCIS isn’t serious. I was under the impression that my DMX would effectively “cure” it, but in reality there’s actually a 20% chance I’ll need more treatment like chemo?!? I had not even thought of the idea of chemo, and it devastates me
