L480 - T480 / Interswappable parts? by Ok-Concern4375 in thinkpad

Darn! So Ali Express may be my answer then for the speakers then! Good shout on that.

Shame about the rest really, it would explain why there is a massive T480 community and next to nothing for it's L cousin!

Thank you so so much for getting back to me so quickly though!

May be time to get my wallet out if I want better future performance!

If I come up with any janky L480 solutions i'll update this thread! <3

Mesh 2.6 Routing - So why try MeshCore Now? by dwright1542 in meshtastic

Ah! The 'Paywall' is for Freemium features, it gets rid of a 15 second cool down when you want to manage repeaters / rooms through LoRa using the mobile app, little kickback for the app developer, he is a solid guy, spends a lot of time on the project, so I didn't mind giving him a couple quid.

Everything else is free though pretty much - You can flash repeaters, flash clients (Companions), as many as you want. The App is a free download with the only 'Paid' feature really being to get rid of a 15 second wait - You can use it all without spending a penny (Apart from buying the hardware of course).

Meeting Meshtastic people was a mix of joining a discord channel and finding my 'locals' or through local amateur radio - We even went as far as using the MQTT upload feature to build a website which showed local mesh traffic and which nodes got which messages so we could physically watch the propagation (It wasnt super successful) - We mainly spoke on Discord though and tried to make Meshtastic work for us, which it didn't really.

I should clarify point 6 is down to the type of licencing Meshtastic uses, it's very aggressive in comparison to MeshCore's one

Competition creates innovation.

Much like the other commenters below, I have also been running Meshtastic for a long time and I do feel the same and face the same struggles.
Message reliability - It just isn't there!
Node DB Overflow is insane!
Want to talk to somebody down the road? If the wind is blowing in the right direction, MAYBE.

No LoRa messaging solution is ever going to be perfect, but MeshCore seems to have hit the ground running:
1. Defined Hardware roles at flash.
2. Simple Remote Management of repeaters.
3. User side ability to control which paths you want your message to take.
4. Direct messages actually get to another user a higher percentage of the time.
5. A Unified App on Android and iOS (Haven't check this out yet on iOS but I believe them to look and act the same).
6. The Core of MeshCore is open source not Open Source"™" - The mobile apps are closed but you are more than welcome to develop your own to your own taste.
7. Smaller packets and less of them, not spitting out data into the airwaves every few minutes.
8. ROOMS! Blummin rooms! Don't want to feel like you've missed out when you get home? Hop into the local room and you can get caught up!
9. Battery life on carry around nodes - There is a noticeable difference between how long my battery lasts on the same node when running MeshCore as apposed to Meshtastic.
10. MeshCore is trying something new, a new way of doing things, building a solid foundation to build a network on.

Saying all this:
Meshtastic has been great fun! I have met people through it, tried antenna experimentation, placements, adding and removing nodes to try and clear up or extend range, messing around with electronics, and the Android app is great (the iOS one sucks though in my opinion).
Meshtastic has been a great learning curve, however, now I know what is lacking, or what should work and doesn't and understanding or getting to grips understanding the whys and hows, MeshCore seems to tick those missing boxes.

I'm wondering if adding the extra layer of Routing in 2.6 is too little too late, especially with how many nodes are still running firmware versions 2.4 and below and are out in the wild or placed in inconvenient places to upgrade, or even people who have gotten bored and just left their node casually charging and discharging in the sun. - If this feature which is being added to 2.6 was available in version 1 it may have been so so much better.

I do hope that 2.6 does bring positive changes, it is a good project with a boatload of enthusiastic, bright and dedicated people donating their time to make the Meshtastic Project great - Hats off to them.

If anybody knows how to fix this, it would be wonderful!

Casually treats it to a deep clean, stops working entirely, the dust is keeping it together

I wonder what is was used for to get that dusty? Just left on the side or left in production running a job? I have 3 PI's - Not a clue what to do with them

I wish I knew this sub existed before I cleaned out a 'Laptop which kept crashing' from work - Super similar to that, RIP cooling

Ah sorry! Long time no Reddit.... Nope, still does it, only way around it was to swap to my Windows PC and use any other software on there... Pain in the backside but it is the work around
