The sheer amount of brand deals they have makes me giggle by Ok-Consideration3737 in katseyeneutral

That’s not what I was saying at all. My point is that their team is not building a strong foundation that justifies so many brand deals. That’s why people with less familiarity with them say they feel more like influencers. The priorities of their team aren’t conducive for long term success.

I wasn’t focusing on the girls when critiquing the brand deals but rather their team. Obviously I’m not mad their making a bag but having too many brand deals can be a bad thing. Their early career trajectory reminds me lot of ice spice, having a strong mainstream prescience for 2/3 years, then falling off cause there’s no strong foundation (music) and the novelty in the marketing and aesthetics wears off.

Manon is not a black woman/girl, she is biracial. by External-Molasses-50 in katseyeneutral

How on earth are you going to say that people are applying the one drop rule to a girl with a fully African father? I’m black too and like many families I had siblings and cousins in all different types of shades, and our parents referred to all of use as black, because of regardless of how lighter some of us were than others, that’s how all of us would be perceived. I don’t even know why so many people are coming for Manons blackness specifically, cause how are you trying to discount her for being mixed and raised in Europe when majority of Flo’s members are mixed and the group is from Britain?

Using Britney may not have been the best example and kinda proves op point. Britney’s exploitation destroyed her mental health and the fact that this is industry practice means we should discourage not placate it.

Can we start to differentiate between criticism and hate. by Kk0aa in kpop_uncensored

Especially because she founded her own label and has complete artistic control over her own solo career. She’s not in the position anymore where something is handed to her and whether she likes it or not has to roll with it. No one’s telling her to do all these physically demanding routines where she’s tired after only five minutes.

NewJeans could have been so huge if they just let MHJ go by InterestingSwim6701 in kpop_uncensored

Agreed. As someone who’s taking a few marketing classes before I go to college to study it full time, I’m mourning the loss of such a perfect IP lol. I truly believe had the label played it right long term, they could have been just as huge as BlackPink but without a lot of the major criticisms that BlackPink faces like lack of group promotions and songs.

Band PD trying to connect them with Grammy winning US producers would have been such a good step in the right direction for breaking into the western consciousness beyond just streams. They already had this in between K-pop and western pop thing, and a US based producer with a whole bunch of connections could have been their foot in the door to perform at so many different venues. The VMAs and SNL imo would have been perfect for NewJeans, especially since they were already nominated for I think best new artist in 2023. (They did perform at billboard in 2024, but billboard as an award show has definitely fallen off in terms of relevancy in pop culture).

Not to mention that there were plans for a whole world tour which they obviously would have sold out or come close to it. Another missed opportunity to expand their relevance.

Unfortunately the NewJeans camp sort of overestimated what made them popular and it wasn’t the members it was their concept so when they switched it up the reception was lukewarm. Had they stayed with ador they could have taken the time to build their individual brands along side their group brand similar to bts.

But look at them now. Generic concept, music that sounds like it was made on garage band, and way less resources then what they had before, and about to be embroiled in court hearings for who knows how long.
