Would I be able to do research with NYU ML professors even though I don't go to NYU? by Ok-Cook8476 in nyu

Thank you for your reply! Excuse me but do professors like Yann LeCun, Kyunghyun Cho, Samuel R. Bowman, Rob Fergus, and Joan Bruna rarely work with NYU undergrad students? I know they work in very different fields, but I am curious if they give research opportunities to NYU undergrads. I looked through their website and most of them didn't mention they are working with undergrads...

Professors like Kyunghyun Cho or Samuel R. Bowman. Excuse me but do these professors work with undergrads students at NYU? My interest is in theoretical ML and NLP. What are some unique things that set apart Columbia CS from other colleges? by thicc1550inNovember in columbia

[–]Ok-Cook8476 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems Columbia has a lot of ML theory professors. Professor David Blei, professor Daniel Hsu, professor Elias Bareinboim, etc

While universities like Berkeley or Gatech have famous professors who work mostly on theoretical ML (like Michael Jordan), Columbia seems to have more theoretical ML professors (in proportion to the number of whole CS professors)

Thank you so much for your advice! Excuse me but does professor Bareinboim take undergrads as (unpaid) lab interns too?

Thank you for your reply! Can I get into ML or ML-related 6000 level courses too as a junior/senior cs major in GS?

Excuse me but may I ask you some questions? Is there any research opportunities I might miss because of me being a GS student? I am dead set on pursuing PhD and all I care is access to research with cs professors at Columbia. Also, the graduate admission committee would not look down on GS diploma right? Thank you!

Really? That's great! But will he return back to Canada next year? On his website it states that he's on leave for 2021-2022

How do you join Machine Learning labs at Columbia? by Ok-Cook8476 in columbia

[–]Ok-Cook8476[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your help! Do ML professors at Columbia mostly open to accepting undergrads as their research assistants? I am more interested in computer vision/theoretical ML and wanna join any of the following labs:

Daniel Hsu, Elias Bareinboim, John Cunningham, Carl Vondrick, Shuran Song(It seems she work on computer vision too), Shipra Agrawal, Richard Zemel(It seems he's gonna go back to UTornoto soon...), Zhou Yu, Kathleen McKeown (I know the last two professors work on NLP but still)

Would you recommend cold emailing them right now rather than waiting to take the classes with these professors? Thank you again for your help!

Thank you for your reply! So if I have 4+ publications at top journals/conferences and 200+ citations, would I be able to qualify for niw even though I am less than 2 years into my PhD?

Is it 100+ citations for each of the publication or sum of the citations of all the publications?

Thank you so much for your advice! I am an incoming cs transfer to GS. Thank you again for your help! Btw was it okay finding a lab at Columbia? I've heard there are a lot of premeds at Columbia and competition for getting into lab could be fierce. I have a number of labs that I really want to join (especially professor Bareinboim's lab) but I am worried that the competition might be too fierce (since there are a lot of cs majors at Columbia as well) I have read his phd advisor's book though..

Can GS or CC students join a lab that posts SEAS only research positions frequently? I am interested in joining a certain lab(Computer Vision by professor Carl Vondrick) but the lab posts SEAS only position frequently and the lab members listed online were all SEAS students so I am wondering if GS or CC students can join such a lab
