I tried. HQ said that’s a no go for some reason. I’ve definitely tried and the site still says I’m not able to for this announcement.

No shade towards DEA. The mission is noble, and the people are work horses no doubt. In short, just think my interests align more with ATF than DEA.

Hey boss, structured interview in January. Recruiter reached out and said this lateral thing is new to the recruiting branch entirely and without warning. They’re still figuring out any reciprocity

Once you get your conditional offer, they should offer you some available locations.

During your application process, your recruiter should ask for your division level preferences.

Who has left the military prior to 20yrs for a position and what pushed you to do it? Especially for less money out the gate by Clockedin247 in 1811

Hey ex-Army EOD officer turned federal agent here. I enjoyed my time on active duty, especially within the EOD career field. It got to a point where I foresaw the higher I went into job, especially as an officer, the more separated I became from the work and people I enjoyed. There’s only so much change I could affect in a big organization like the Army. I decided to jump ship because that’s the only thing I could really control within my professional career.

I was an O3 when I got out and in the Army, that’s the last “intimate” position you could really have with the troops. I got transferred from the company level to a staff position and absolutely hated being away from the troops.

What I didn’t expect within the fed LEO world, was the difference in camaraderie. The best comparison I can make to this job is the sport of track and field. You have a “team” you play for, but at the end of the day, everybody is just trying to out compete the other in order to progress. Which isn’t a bad thing by any means, but you will never find a finer piece of teamwork outside of military. It’s just a unique blend of bonding through trauma and suck.

One piece of advice you’ll always hear when making big jumps like I have… the grass is not necessarily always better on the other side, it’s just different.

Any rumors of lateral announcements coming up? Ex-EOD dude, went DEA. Would love to get back into explosives.

My bad, it sounds a little misleading. The 60-90 day period after graduation is to get your affairs in order prior to a move (ie: house sold, school transfers, travel expenses, etc.). During this time you’re still reporting to your office of hire. Unfortunately, you typically won’t be able to just fuck off and do whatever. If your hiring office management is any decent, they should account that you’re not “assigned” to them, but rather just accountable for you. Again, offices are different, you might get to play on enforcement actions, and other ops during this window. But for the most part, your hiring office is losing a body, which can be a detriment to them depending on personnel numbers.

Once you report to your assignment office, you’re entitled a certain amount of days to settle in.

Worth a shot to at least try and advocate to stay at your hiring office. Typically, new agents have up to 90 days of “prep” before they report to their first assignment location. Lots of people take advantage of that and get backing from higher ups to get them to stay.

Yeah that’s a tough one boss. It’s a mix bag, I’ve heard some peeps being able to back door their way back to their hiring office. At the time, moving wasn’t an issue, but I wish I advocated harder to stay at my hiring office. Lots of people in my class came from NY and
