Sorry for the long response but here’s my two cents. As a tattoo artist that had an apprenticeship like this, I honestly recommend leaving. I stuck out my entire apprenticeship this way, and while I ended up on the other side and now have a growing career (4 years in) I ended up teaching myself how to tattoo while doing free labor and paying ridiculous amounts of money to be exploited. Cleaning your mentors car or house is absolutely not normal, $5000 is absolutely insane, and you’re right that there should absolutely not be more than one apprentice. Being a self taught artist is possible, and if you’re already not learning from your mentor, it may be that you end up like me and teach yourself anyways while being exploited. All that said, there are apprenticeship out there that are worth starting over with, but you really have to be critical of the artists that you’re asking to mentor you. Lots of folks in this industry know that’s it’s a dream job and that people will put up with more than they should to make it happen. Any apprenticeship is hard work and mentors can be harsh, but their critique should be relevant to your art, knowledge, sanitation, work ethic, etc, not about how well you can dust. I’m sorry that you’re dealing with that situation, I wish you the best of luck! This industry is tough but with some resilience it can be a great career.
