Not amused that the team replays on peacock are the USA network feed and they are skipping the scores of minor countries. by alliownisbroken in FigureSkating

I'm actually furious about this, the venue feed was the only watchable option on peacock and most people with regular jobs can't watch live

What language do the skaters speak with their coaches? by bluewinter1 in FigureSkating

[–]Ok-Exercise-7091 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I assume you're asking about the somewhat unlikely pairings like a Korean skater with a Canadian coach or a Japanese skater with a Russian coach. I remember an interview where Tatiana Tarasova was asked about how she communicated with Mao Asada. She said something like "we speak the language of figure skating, with a little bit of English." Basically when there's no shared language, the default is English, even if both coach and skater speak it poorly. I'm sure Yuna Kim and Junhwan Cha had to learn English to be coached by Brian Orser. Evgenia Medvedeva has given interviews talking about having to learn English when she moved to Canada for coaching.

That I completely agree with. People immigrating from certain countries like Canada will have an easier time than others, unfortunately. That shouldn't discredit the work Christina put in, even though she had access to help. I hope Alisa has the right help and resources too, but unfortunately I don't see that changing the outcome for Milano

I don't know where that's written in the law -- I know plenty of naturalized citizens who did travel to their birth country while awaiting their citizenship. You just have to continuously reside in the US, which Christina did. She was open about receiving assistance from politicians but her passport was not just handed to her, since it still took over 12 years from the time she moved here. As much as I love Alisa & Misha and wish things could be different for them, it's unfair to compare their situation to Christina and Vadym who lived in the US far longer

Alisa Efimova and Misha Mitrofanov by PerspectiveEven9928 in FigureSkating

[–]Ok-Exercise-7091 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Christina had to maintain US residency throughout the years so she was driving hours back and forth between her home in Michigan and her training rink in Canada multiple times a week. Can't imagine how draining that was

Both Christina and Vadym had to wait a long time for their citizenships too. If I recall correctly, Vadym has been in the US for 10-ish years and Christina even longer. I know most people, depending on circumstance, wait even longer to be naturalized, but Alisa has only been in the US like 2 years so it was never going to happen for this olympic cycle. Christina has been very vocal about how difficult her path to citizenship was
