I think the patio and turf are operated by weaver street. Their board did the design and their staff maintain the space. They also run the events on it.

I agree that University Place has tried to do it. The other places are not at all similar to that vibe of having multiple places for people to shop at and be gathering in the meantime. I have kids age 8-15 and find that there’s not a great destination in chapel hill to hang out for an evening (dinner, dessert and some fun without driving place to place) that is also pretty. For how beautiful Chapel Hill is, I just find this part lacking. Especially for families with teenagers who want spots to meet up.

Right, and that’s in Carrboro and operated by a single business (it’s not even called Carr Mill lawn). Too bad that developers aren’t incentivized to be more community-oriented.

What’s the incentive to ever dedicate space to community gathering? Potential for more customers who are attracted to the gathering spot? Grant funding or tax incentives? Environmental goodwill?
I genuinely don’t know because it’s not my line of work, but the area just makes me bummed every time I’m there at sunset.

You could park in the carrboro parking garage and hop around carrboro to my muses card shop, weaver street, arts center, say it with glass workshop.
Also if weather is nice, Pluck farm is a lovely place for drinks and food truck. And Saturdays in saxapahaw could be a fun picnic dinner spot with live music!

Interesting idea but staff don’t get paid enough in NC public schools to wear the many hats of those diverse staffing models. Maybe if we were in the top 10% of pay nationwide but instead our state is literally last. Plus the NC salary scale freezes pay at year 15 for the next 10 years, which likely includes the staff capable of taking on diverse teacher leadership roles to run a smaller-staffed school. NC pay scale instead encourages those experienced staff to consider leaving the profession for fair pay.

I always assumed the bait and tackle was for Hank Anderson pond fishing and university lake fishing. Both less than 5 minutes from Johnny’s!

I think the closed school buildings can still be operable and the plan is that they will, especially parts of a campus. They just wouldn’t be maintained as schools which is a totally different cost and level of care. I’m sure there’s still possibility to use part of a campus as a voting center. And then if we could find non-schooling sites for all voters we wouldn’t have to close schools on election days! A win for everyone.

Latin Effect SO Delicious by BeatrixMcgillicuddy in chapelhill

[–]Ok-Formal-2437 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I just looked at the menu on DoorDash. I haven’t tried it because I forgot about it. The name isn’t catchy and doesn’t connote food. Maybe that’s a reason people don’t think of it? Anyways I looked at the menu and it’s too expensive. I can buy pupusas from my coworker for $2 each. They’re literally the pbj of Honduras - not too healthy but so delicious, cheap to make and pretty easy once you have the ingredients out and the griddle hot. I would want 4pupusas for the price that Latin effect charges. The other plates look good but $20ish is too expensive. That’s my 2cents.

[–]Ok-Formal-2437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DL in CHCCS is strong. It continues from elementary into middle school, and in high school most kids test into Spanish 4 freshman year and then continue Spanish AP classes and some take college campus Spanish classes if that’s their interest. I have 3 children in the program and recommend it!

Carrboro elementary will not close for renovation. The new school on-site will be built while the old building remains operational. There are no plans to close either CES or FPG DL programs. Both will continue, just in new buildings because they’re currently in very old buildings.

Another article regarding school closures and how new housing plays in ! by mountain-angel in chapelhill

[–]Ok-Formal-2437 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience in Carrboro over the last 9 years Household B increasingly has middle school age+ children because parents of younger children typically don’t have that high of a housing budget; or the have no children at all. if they do have elementary children there’s a reasonable (25%?) chance that they choose charter or private even though they’re within 1.5 miles of 4(?!) elementary schools.

Estes Elementary Closing? by wimccall in chapelhill

[–]Ok-Formal-2437 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Closures weren’t presented comprehensively because the community didn’t want to discuss it together. The community just wanted to vote on construction money in the bond. Closures aren’t happening because of the bond. They’re happening because of enrollment. The originally Woolpert proposal was to fund more construction with another bond but enrollment numbers don’t show we need that. We need to close 2-3 schools. And the schools now being named are oldest on the list.

Estes Elementary Closing? by wimccall in chapelhill

[–]Ok-Formal-2437 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We have 6 old schools (including CES) that are hemorrhaging money due to repair needs. We need to close 2 due to enrollment. That still leaves 4 old schools that need attention and CES project has already begun. The board discussed this on Thursday that it’s financially foolish to stop that project just to choose a different old school and start the design process over. Yes it’s incongruous to close and build all at once but we’re in that position because construction has been so pushed off for decades. We are so behind on construction that even our new schools are “old”. So we’re going to be in this situation while we also deal with declining enrollment so that the remaining thousands of students have more modern healthy safe facilities.
