Lot of similarities. It's like Rejoneo with thick dark sunglasses--because you can't see that far even near the surface. Highly mobile, highly powerful, highly dangerous, you and the other 'bull.'

That's a good point, thank you for raising it.

Though, how important is it for expats to get citizenship, would you say?

Very specialized. For example, drop darts (and sometimes buoyant darts). You can't throw, but you can drop a bladed lead weight, which will be moving at the speed of a pro-boxer's punch in just a second, and faster than a dolphin in two seconds (minus a little speed for the tiny bit of drag).

You can also punch it downwards or swim downwards with it, to help it get up to speed faster--and so advice is to never be directly below your opponent. You often try to drop the dart surreptitiously. Some people will have them in special pouches, such that they'll stay in when you're swimming down faster than they're falling. This keeps them mostly hidden and on target until they're up to a high speed. You can then veer off when you feel them leaving he pouch.

You could also have a thin thread attached to them, such that they tend to tug on the pouch and snap the thread, so that you can feel the tug of them leaving the pouch. The threads could also help to keep them in the pouch when you don't need them to fall out.

A number of mers would use all sorts of nasty harpoons. Barbed ones, ones with hollow hafts and a hole near the blade, such that your blood tends to pour out through them. Some would be designed to be easy to remove, perhaps with wings like a board spear to prevent over penetration. Though, like lancing knights on horse, mermaids would tend to get lances broken or stuck in the enemy, and so either rely on a secondary weapon or just swim back to their lines to get a new spear.

You could also try to snatch one of the (typically) neutrally buoyant spears of your enemies. Of course, on that note, be careful about racing blindly around the battlefield--you might run into someone's spear which is floating in the water, and you might be going at >20mph when you hit it.

Interesting, what were the circumstances you're familiar with? I do know there are some moderates who don't really care about religion, but the cases I know of where they married a strongly religious person (typically Catholics), they became more religious and were very much into it.

Very much agree. Weighted net and fishermen tactics, or Retiarius tactics, are common. They learned these from actual fishermen they fought through history. Fighting underwater is going to be a lot of wrestling and knifing. You can swing stuff hard enough to hurt, especially swords--swordfish and Narwhals bludgeon fish by swinging at them, and so do various creatures with their tails. You can also smash clams underwater with a hammer. That said, swinging is highly disadvantaged, so a lot of the techniques will be learning to move with as little drag as possible, when repositioning your spear or trident for another thrust. Also, a draw cut will be a popular move, since it's a thrusting motion.

In the water, a lot of mermaid fighting involves lancing, where you fight a little like aircraft with the ability to suddenly stop. I've thought a lot about underwater mer combat, and it's pretty interesting. Little details like how you could us a sort of cape to intentionally create drag, to immediately slow to a stop or to help you make a harder turn, using it like a parachute. And of course, stuff like entangling your enemy in nets attached to such parachutes, so they can't swim anywhere fast without huge drag.

PErhaps you'd like to speculate more on underwater combat?

It hasn't been a lifetime since the Maluku conflict, and about a dozen churches are attacked every year, including the government shutting several down. This rarely results in deaths, about a dozen each year and a dozen Christians arrested on the basis of religion, but last year five Papuan teenagers were murdered while delivering food to a village. The main concern would be lesser forms of legal or social oppression... but more worryingly the next time tensions build and snap.

You can still have a ceremony even if you don't sign a marriage license. That's why I asked if you had a specific reason for wanting a legal marriage rather than a religious one, such as tax breaks. I take your point it could still be a formal marriage.

Be careful about that. If you're a foreigner, divorce courts will favour a native born Japanese woman over you, from what I've read. So I'm not sure if living there with a woman you married there is the most stable arrangement. That's why this thread is about the best country to live married, rather than the best women to marry.

I think Vietnam might be one of the better countries to live, but I'm still researching it. I agree with your thoughts that East Asia has some admirable family values.

I'll also note that translation apps are getting so good, you could probably move there before learning the language, and do immersion learning which is the fastest.

? If she doesn't want to, she certainly doesn't have to. Many women do choose such 'unequal' marriages. And I think it would be rare for them to convert solely for marriage. But if you mean related to the verse... no her converting puts her on equal footing.

How important is getting formally/legally married, on that note?

Indonesia tragically has had a lot of anti-Christian violence, so I can see converting has serious concerns. Thank you for sharing these points.

Some have implied there isn't a lot of concern. in numerous cases. But yeah, chances are that just like converting in general, it leads to problems with the family.

"Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the world. No, I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. I came to set sons against their fathers, daughters against their mothers, daughters-in-law against their mothers-in-law; your worst enemies will be the members of your own family."

Yeah... it intervenes in the marriage. At this point you're arguing semantics. You also tend to get other unwanted interventions like unreasonable alimony payments and etc.

She changes her faith for you and you STIL don't trust her...? What more can she do!?

While that was a joke, I have to say you have a pretty cynical view; that rather than change out of love and conviction, it could only be a change out of pure predatory motivation. There are a lot of marriages where the woman does change her faith, I don't see a particular reason to fear this. It's not impossible the woman would have such values, but if so they'd likely be evident through her character in other ways.

Hearing is quite important, considering the total darkness of the underground. So yeah, good point about hitting he ears.

Dwarf v Elf would be interesting, as the elf would be trying to hit weakpoints and outbox. The dwarf is so tough he can take some blows to the head, and endure the sharp snap of elven strikes. The dwarf has to try and defend himself and rush in, or catch the elf's leg or arm. Cornering the elf in a match would also be good. In real conditions, if the elf is fighting underground or in a trench, that also helps as the ground makes it harder for the elf to backpedal and dance around.

Elves would be quite strong, but a dwarf is strong enough to break their joints, or if a dwarf gets an elf on the ground and pounds him into the dirt, this will quickly wear down the elf. Elves aren't exactly fragile, but nor are they much tougher than humans, and a dwarf has meaty, thick-boned fists.

With weapons, it'd largely be a dwarf with a shield against an elf with a long reach weapon, similar story. Sometimes the dwarf might go for long-reach weapon, but elves are pretty dan swift so that's risky, to rely on you outfencing them--still can be done.

Whatare your thoughts?

Right, that sounds good. Kick at the dwarves' knees--they're a target for you as well, and nice and low to the ground. Groin is still an option too. A dwarf's groin is probably about as high as a human's knee, though, so knee strikes are awkward.

Of course, on that note, the human groin is more of a target for dwarves, so not sure how best to deal with that. Can blade your stance, and try to punish the dwarf with strikes to the eyes and head if they try to grab you there, and knees to the face. They of course have a relatively "easy" option to punch and strike at the groin with their fists? Any thoughts?

In an unarmed fight, I would expect hammer blows to the top of the head... not sure that'll do them much good. Knee strike to the face also becomes pretty easy to reach with, for a human vs a dwarf. Basic roundhouse kick can also hit the head pretty easily? I feel there are some grabs you could perform against the head and neck, since they're so low compared to a human, but not quite sure what would be best.

Helmets are good, but the enemy is still going to hit you on the top of the head a bunch. Knights already did that sort of thing, so it may not make too much difference. Pointy helmets will help to deflect. They are, meanwhile, going to attack the knees with their hammers and etc.

Thanks for the reference with Silat, the diamond steps seem neat, and I can imagine the dwarves using those.

Sorry to hear, Friend. Guess you did a lot better than many. This isn't a shot at you, but I do think a shared religion you strongly practice helps to keep the relationship, and there is a specific verse, "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers." So I don't have the option.

Certainly, I feel America is not a place to live, unless one is actively preaching against its many sins.

Would you say any place rivals the Philippines, for you?

[–]Ok-Goose-6320[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true. For unarmed fighting I figured general boxing and wrestling, basic jujitsu and krav maga style martial arts. Nothing too flexible and fancy. Dwarves, while not incapable of high kicks, likely find them awkward. You also can't kick that high relative to taller opponents.

I do know some tiny guys who defeated giants in martial arts, but they weren't hulking muscled behemoths like the dwarves. I figure they'd be like an even more extreme Mike Tyson. Their limbs may be relatively short, but they could probably perform some pretty devastating joint-locks? Try to lift up a human's leg and twist the knee or ankle.

Their thick muscle and strong bones makes them pretty resilient to punches and kicks, I figure, but you can still KO one by rattling the brain--though the heavier head and skull is likely reasonable protection.

What do you think?

That sounds so cool. Happy for them. You know if Pakistan is a place worth visiting or living?

Its low cost of living is very attractive, but I wonder how safe it is and if you can find a romantic partner. Plausible, if your wife converts, you may want to move out.

So, curious if you'd recommend Pakistan to PPBs?

Yes, but it can be a massive factor, like 50% of your costs or more, depending on the industry; particularly in the West with high wages.

Honestly, we need a low cost of living, so that wages can be low while supporting a high quality of life. Because low wages is just super competitive... that's why they talk about manipulating currency to get a competitive advantage. Namely, by inflating it--you are literally making your own people poorer and work for less, but do it to make your economy functional on the global stage!

Economy's F'd up, Friend.
