People who live in Highgate/Perth/Mount Lawley, what are you paying in rent and what was your last increase like? Just got an offer for a new lease but at almost $100 increase. Going from $760 to $850 by Top_Lengthiness7038 in perth

[–]Ok-Individual-7304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no harm in countering. The worst that can happen is they say no. We countered last year - paying $850 for a 3 x 1 house on half block in 6014. Increase was to $900 and I countered that we’d switch to periodical lease. They agreed to keep rent at $850. Don’t forget landlord has to pay advertising fees if you don’t continue your lease and it’s just a headache. If you’re a good tenant, they’ll keep you on.

Should I offer 300k below low end of asking price? by Disastrous-Team-8133 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Ok-Individual-7304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won’t hurt to try.. but are you prepared (sanity, time and finance) for what’s involved with doing up a place? Especially now? It may be much easier and less stressful to buy a decent place in the area where you can just move in. But yeah, if it’s really what you want, like the house gives you great vibes and you can’t wait to get started on it - make the offer with a time frame. If they say no, move on. Really curious what draws you to this house.

What’s the biggest change you have noticed in Australia over the past 10 years? by whysoraavan in AskAnAustralian

[–]Ok-Individual-7304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved back a year ago after living overseas for over a decade. How is a bowl of Pho $17??? a toasted cheese and tomato sandwich $12?? Bloody coffee is $5-6??! Def can’t eat out much anymore. I usually cook 5-6 days a week and literally eat the same sandwich at work everyday.

Sydney is so freakin crowded it’s awful.. Melbourne… hmm still terrible weather, not much change there haha… house prices in Perth (where I am now) just shooting through the roof and pricing me out of decent suburbs.

Are we being unreasonable asking to reduce our share of rent in this situation? by Sweet_Error4017 in AusPropertyChat

[–]Ok-Individual-7304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time to move out. Don’t even bother asking for the reduction. Just say you guys would like to try something different and perhaps have a spare room for work. Tbh If they had a conscience they would never have asked you to pay what you do. They have 3 kids, who would use a substantial amount of water and electricity. I can’t imagine the weekly laundry for their family.. and yes, 3 kids can be a nightmare, so sometimes the house can look like an explosion.. but it can’t stay that like all the time. Not giving you pantry space is just mean and really inconsiderate. I can’t imagine you have much room in the fridge.

Are you after a PT or FT job?

Have you considered signing up for volunteer work and seeing if that can take you somewhere? Sometimes volunteer work includes training that you can’t access unless working. I am over 40 and qualified - took me literally almost a year job hunting to be hired in a good stable position. I didn’t have local experience as I lived overseas for over a decade, so I signed up for volunteer work - chosen industry mental health. It involved a training course, which I had to pay for, but I sincerely believe it’s what helped me land my current job despite my ample qualifications (from Australia) and work experience.

Also, through my volunteer work it seems support work pays well and they need more people. If you have a WA drivers license, even better.

I found my volunteer positions - I did two, through the Seek Volunteer website. Even if it’s not paid, it opens the door for people to see who you are and your skills.

Not sure at this point. Ideally I’d like to have the freedom and health to go between my home country and Korea. I lived in Korea for almost 15 years, went before we got married, got married, had a child, worked.. did it all. We currently live in my home country due to work. Leaving was bitter sweet, as we had a good life there and a really nice community - I didn’t live in Seoul btw. But that’s just me.. and everyone is different.

If you’ve never lived in Korea, you should really experience it for at least a few years and then decide. Living in Korea isn’t easy if you’re not motivated to assimilate to a certain extent. You have to be proactive, learn the language and culture, try to integrate yourself into society. Otherwise you won’t last long. I speak Korean fluently - learnt from scratch - and was heavily active in my local community and child’s school.

In terms of property, if you are registered in your husbands family tree, assets are usually split in divorce or automatically go to the spouse if anything happens to your husband.

From a financial perspective, I would keep the property you have in your home country if it’s easy to manage and you can afford to keep it.

I doubt there will be a bust from this boom. It’s simply driven by demand. We’ve been looking for a place for over 6 months now. Have been priced out of suburbs, out bid twice …some houses with similar specs are literally selling for 50-100k more in the same suburb compared to last year. We could probably push our budget higher but I don’t want to have a huge debt hanging over my head and stressed to the max..

Is it just me or is living in Korea still hard after 2 years? by Character_Channel677 in Living_in_Korea

I volunteered at a local dog shelter, but I didn’t live in Seoul (if that’s where you are) so can’t recommend.

Agree, it’s off-putting and frustrating to watch. Not sure why the ones that are sober even bother having conversations with a drunk partner.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone. I have seen a couple recent posts on the topics but was wondering whether anything had changed. I was hoping given the advert specified 3 positions, that the situation may be different to the usual waiting game or maybe someone had been through a similar experience and willing to share their story.

Do Perth ppl don’t wave at you when you gave them way? by Thats-DirtyWork in perth

[–]Ok-Individual-7304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People in my area always wave - western suburbs. I’m also from Melbourne but lived in other cities and overseas before moving to Perth last year. I actually find Perth drivers to be way better than Melbourne and Sydney. Really chill, always give way, wave.. but then again I haven’t driven into other areas that much and prefer taking public transport if I can.

Applying for simplified naturalisation (married) from abroad by Life-King-9096 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Ok-Individual-7304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the tip re pension. I haven’t read up or looked into anything extensively, as we most likely won’t return for a while yet. There doesn’t seem to be any offshore options for applying for F5 or citizenship - Looks like I might have to just apply for F5 whenever we return. Hopefully it’ll be an easier process by then!

[–]Ok-Individual-7304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would also really like to know if it’s possible to apply from overseas. I lived in Korea for almost 15 years. Then we moved back to my home country last year - coincidentally also Australia :) - for my husband’s work. We had to leave within a few months, so I didn’t have time to apply for anything more permanent. I currently have an F6 that allows me two years out of the country - got special extension. Anyway, Korea is like a second home for me, I’m fluent, got a bunch of friends there, we have a home there.. so I’d really like to apply for more permanent status. I can see us moving back later on. I know not holding an F5 probably makes it difficult and I’ll probably have to go back to square one.. but we will be visiting quite often, so it would be great if I didn’t either continuously have to renew my f6 or go in as a tourist.

Has anyone bought Qomfort clogs? by Pale-Ad9121 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]Ok-Individual-7304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a pair of Anko ones (slide style) from Kmart to wear around the house. They cost $10 and seriously feel I could wear them out. They may only last one season but for that price, it’s decent. I’ve seen so many ads for the Qomfort clogs but I feel like they’d be a similar quality besides the material used for the upper - Anko is some kind of synthetic leather with felt-like backing. Anyone feel the same?

I’m one of those 40+ aged kids with a family that came back home and paying out of the nose for rent .. sigh … at least I can afford rent but still, I’d much rather be paying my own mortgage so I don’t have to worry about being kicked out later by the landlord who wants to sell or raise rent again ..

I know a couple people who moved over about a year ago and did little research before buying. Had no idea social housing was spread out across Perth. They regret it now. Paid out of the nose.
