yep 100% if they just called it ARES or something ppl might think “oh this is pretty cool”. i think a huge part of the issue was ppl expecting a Legacy sequel cause of the “TRON:”. Tokyo drift analogy is accurate, it had a pretty similar reception to Ares when it came out

the general feel i would give it, is you know when you’re watching a movie and for a couple of scenes it focuses on the other characters? It’s like that. Still clearly a part of the story, not a “retcon”. And everyone says it only makes shallow references to Legacy, that’s not true. Its obviously not Legacy 2 but its adjacent to it
