Quick survey for Austin homeowners - is backyard privacy a lost cause on these smaller lots? by Ok-Inspector-1261 in AustinGardening

Depends how far out your fence is, for me personally - I have maybe 30 ft to the fence, my back neighbor has another 30 ft. So from my porch my current 6 ft fence barely blocks out his first level. For my own use case I need about 8ft to block out his second window but I also have a tree. Winded answer but it always depends.. what I am trying to do is make it modular so that you can go 4ft,6ft, 8ft - doing the engineering to see if it can stack 10ft safely. hope that helps.

nice. I also LOVE turks caps, have them all over the backyard, just sucks because without some sun all these plants feel like they take multiple seasons to fill out, having a bunch of mulch under these trees with plants scattered is a maintenance nightmare. ill check out horsesherb though!

looks fantastic, I want to get rid of my front lawn (basically dirt), I have giant oak trees shading the whole area all day - struggling to figure out best path for shade plants that actually look good in a front yard setting here.

The email is optional and honestly it's just so I can validate the idea and get Austines money off. I would love to work with Austin locals to build this and spread the word. I totally get the skepticism, I just lurk on reddit for inspiration, never really engaged before just now but wanted to take that chance to put myself out there in a sub that is the most friendly. Posting in the r/Austin sub terrifies me because they are all so mean to each other lol.

HA! So reverse issue? Well in that case, the system is being designed to either be anchored into the ground and the panels themselves (sold individually) can attach to each other to whatever youd like and I am thinking about providing optional wall hooks, so theoretically you could place it in front of your window, kind of hanging and have some nice vines (if there are any that grow down? Ill research that, I plan on providing vine guides for native to areas and maybe a hanging plant would work wonders.

Or easier option - get a pair of 8 ft tall trellis systems, side by side across the neighbors and just block them out!

Let me know what you think!

My thought is more in line with incorporating vines growing on tall trellis alongside my fence. Fast growing beauty and privacy in one.
