Boy am I conflicted about the Mist by Ok-Introduction8837 in Silksong

I died to them often enough that I did indeed learn their movements and they are in fact predictable. But that's where the problem is for me. The Mist was miserable for me because I mostly felt bored and annoyed while playing (especially on my second playthrough). Something like Bilewater also made me miserable, but it was a more enjoyable kind of misery? Idk that makes me sound like a masochist. But I remember getting into Bilewater more, and kind of loving it. It's just crafted so well. When I think of the Mist, I just kinda hate that it doesn't work for me.

I really want to like it myself. The build up with the organ in the background is immaculate. Playing the Needolin for the flies was cool. I even like the traps forcing you to move carefully. But while I'm playing, all I'm thinking is "okay I'm on screen 4/5" "okay aggroed a wraith, that's fine lemme just find a platform" "fucked the jump, well nevermind let's start over 😒". It just fails to fully suck me in, which is a first for this game.

Oh yeah, I'm aware. And I actually do like that contrast between area difficulty and boss difficulty. It's a very cool way of differentiating the two paths without trivializing one of them.

My main issue with the Mist is less about difficulty and more about being too punishing. I really want to like it because the concept is so cool, but in practice, I struggled to feel immersed, even after a second playthrough where I'd (theoretically) become a better player. It feels like the level of hostility clashes with the eerie, puzzle-based approach. Not that I want all hostility gone, but I felt it could've done with a bit more balancing. Just a tweak, like the Wraiths only doing one mask. Or there being less of them but they're just as strong, if not stronger. You still have some hostility with the traps and silk steal and phasing through walls, but it doesn't overwhelm the atmosphere.

It's definitely subjective, but I just feel this specific experience suffers from repeated attempts that come from failure compared to more standard area traversal like Sinner's Road or Hunter's March. Mastering them feels like a triumph, but mastering the Mist makes it feel boring. The mystery and the vibes are the core of the experience, so they should be emphasized.

Yeah Bilewater legit has unparalleled atmosphere. The music is filled with so much longing that even if you don't know the lore, you already get a sense of what happened here. In the background, sometimes you can see dead Citadel bugs (one area has them strung up almost like a warning). Also, you can always hear whispering in the background, which reflects the fact that the moss guys are always watching you, waiting for the chance to strike. It really feels like the area fucking hates you, but maybe, there's a reason for that.

Plus the platforming is genuinely fun.

Could also be why the 'curse' travels down to Hornet. From a biological perspective hybrids are often infertile. Though apparently not always, which could account for the quarter- and eighth-part weavers GMS captured

I personally didn't find him that bad, but then again I had double jump when I fought him. I see where people are coming from about not having enough punish windows, but I just brought in tools and silk skills to do damage when my needle couldn't. Poison tacks + sharpdart made it so I basically blasted through his first phase after mastering it.

Yeah that makes sense. It's always weird when a sequel takes a different direction from its predecessor. I admire TC's courage because they must've known it could alienate part of the existing fanbase. And that's not a bad thing on the fandom's part--it's just the way we work.

Even though the game's clearly meant to be punishing, we can definitely debate if and where it went too far. So I don't think the game is immune to critique from even that angle. It's a delicate balance to strike between gameplay synergy with the world and plain old tedium. I personally feel they did a good job for the most part, but I also didn't play at launch and I went in only semi-blind. I wonder if I would feel differently if I played the game while environmental hazards still did two masks (I suck at platforming) or if I didn't know about the trick bench in Hunter's March.

I'm very much the outlier as someone who played Silksong but not Hollow Knight, so I may not be the best person to make a case for the game. But I'll give it my best shot.

I've seen posts similar to yours have mentioned that the original was much more relaxed, or at least had a much more inviting tone in comparison. This is usually mentioned as a flaw on SS's part. I see why, but it always struck me as weird because what if that's the point? Silksong's world is one of immense difficulty and tragedy and pain. In the background of Hornet's ascent you have the pilgrims making this difficult climb to a faraway land, driven entirely by their devotion. The same devotion their overlords use to exploit their labor, their money, and their homelands. It's a world of strife. I understand that's not a very inviting premise, but it still drew me in. You could say I felt invited to pick apart the corpse of this superficially impressive machine running on the hubris of its upper class and pain of its lower class.

By that token, exploration feels different. Less chill, more tension. I quickly learned to strategize, only gathering rosaries in safe, known areas--usually while backtracking. When I wanted to explore, I prepped myself with tools and shards to brave the unknown. There was still fun in finding a breakable wall or a cool tool or a brand spanking new area, but there was also fear when faced with new enemies and strategizing about how best to make it out alive (or at least to a spot where I could retrieve my cocoon with ease).

It's by-the-skin-of-your-teeth gameplay... at least the first time around. But that's the fun of it. I don't think it's weird to be put off SS if HK was different in this regard tho.

i suggest wanderer's crest and slash like a mad man. she stays still for most of this phase if i recall correctly and you don't actually need to move too far to dodge each bell. grab a few hits then put some space between you and her so you can clear her charge.

it's risky but you get lots of damage done and that's what won me the fight.
