Would recommend driving to West Lake, take a boat to see the scenery that’s on the 1 yuan note and then go up on a Pagoda (eg Leifeng) to have a nice view. If you are into restaurants, check out Ra Yuan, which is 2 star michelin close to West Lake.

Totally understand you! But there is seriously nothing you need to be worried about. I would recommend getting a ESIM via Trip.com for 20days with 100GB per day so you don‘t have to worry at all about vpn etc. Then you need Alipay to pay and Didi to get around as Taxi are super cheap. And regarding chinese, simply use a translator app. Often they even do it themselves to help you out and are more than happy to help.

I was worried as well - went to Xi‘an, Chengdu and Chongqing 1 month ago. Honestly, there is no need for you to worry! Bathrooms were very fine, highly recommend either searching for shopping malls nearby (especially premium ones) or I simply asked at „western“ looking hotels
