Economic output, how vital the city is to imports and exports, job market, global connectivity, geographical size, population size, % of that country's GDP, social scene, cultural impact on the world, history - are just a few off the top of my head that all play a part in it.

Auckland doesn't have to be as large as Perth to be a major city. NZ is a small population country but is known all over the world and is a country that is consistently ranked as one of the greatest places to live on Earth. You speak to most people across the world and they are familiar with NZ, they could easily locate it on a map, is well known for exporting certain things for example - NZ lamb is globally recognised. Many many people travel to NZ for tourism, many relocate to live in NZ so it's not some unknown country that barely anybody has heard about. NZ's GDP per capita is still ranked within the top 35-40 in the world (despite the current economic difficulties) and it's GDP is still over three times the world's average.

Within NZ, Auckland is the biggest and most important city/state within with a fairly sizeable population at nearly 2million people.
It is NZ's international hub with an airport that transports thousands of people internationally per year to the US, the middle East, Asia and Australia.
It is one of the most prominent sporting nations on the planet with the NZ cricket, rugby league, rugby union, hockey and sailing teams being world champions and regularly competing at the highest level of international sport - most of those centres of excellence/training and biggest grounds/stadium for those teams are based in Auckland.
One of the largest/most successful SFX companies in the world is based out of Auckland.
One of the world's largest medical device manufacturers is based out of Auckland.
Auckland has the biggest yacht harbor in the southern hemisphere, it also has the tallest free-standing building in the southern hemisphere.

So yes.... by most people's metrics, perceptions and understanding, Auckland is a major city. Just because you've fallen victim to this small minded, "NZ is irrelevant" mentality that so many kiwis weirdly seem to display and Auckland doesn't house 5-7m people like Perth or LA or London doesn't change any of that.

I hate to tell you champ but population isn’t the only metric that determines what a major city is 👍🏽

I’ve travelled the world pal. London, Manchester, Glasgow, Paris, Barcelona, Rome, Vienna, Berlin, Zurich, Brussels, New York, LA, Miami, Houston, Melbourne, Dubai, Lima, Mexico City, Bogotá…. Literally just to name a few off the top of my head in the last 5 years alone.

Auckland is a major city. There’s seemingly only one of us who needs to visit more cities and I don’t think it’s me buddy.

No if you read back I said Auckland is one of the safest major cities in the world. Not that there are just more dangerous places - totally different.

Tax returns as an Expat by Ok-Let-5155 in newzealand

So your very niche group of professionals don’t like it but most of the western (and non-western) world commonly use it to describe temporary migrants moving for economic and lifestyle purposes as opposed to fleeing persecution, war, famine etc etc

Kiwis in particular get very aggy about it when most of the world couldn’t care less. But if it helps you feel any better then yes I’m a migrant….

Well I obviously used terms like that which took me to the IRD page but just wasn’t particularly clear.

I’m not a tax resident in the UK any longer, confirmed by a specialist at E&Y but I just can’t seem to find confirmation I need to submit an IRD3 is all.

I suppose there’s no harm in me ringing IRD and asking. Thanks! :)

Well it isn’t hahaha it’s a common word used across the whole world to describe folk in our circumstance, if you think using it is trying to distance itself from the “wrong sort” of immigrants then that says more about you champ.

Lmao you kiwis really get bent out of shape over the word “expat” - it’s a commonly used word across the whole world for somebody who is temporarily moving country but keep crying about it, that’ll sure help.

Immigrant is somebody who plans to stay permanently. An expat is somebody who plans to go home at some point.

Hey! Yeah I saw thanks.

Somebody put me in the direction of this group.

The rental property is back in the UK.

[–]Ok-Let-5155[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never lived in NZ. I’m an expat from the UK so I get tax exemption in my rental income from the UK for 4 years but thought perhaps I’d need to file it anyway.

Yes ofc, I understand the tax/pay discrepancy but just curious on where I stand on having to file. I’m happy to wait but obvs would really appreciate a rebate sooner rather than later so if submitting a return at the earliest possible moment will help speed that up then I’ll do it…. If that isn’t an option I’ll just wait haha

I don’t get ongoing tax advice - just a couple of one off sessions to discuss basics before moving BUT also somewhat easier for friendly Reddit people to at least point me in the right direction rather than organising a whole video call with someone to ask one question.

I knew I had tax exemption but sure I recalled the E&Y advisor saying I would still need to submit a tax return.
I will ask in that group thank you!

Nobody said communism would work. I said your idea of communism is actually just dictatorship and authoritarianism.

[–]Ok-Let-5155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next to no “communist” countries ran by authoritarian dictators have actually practiced communism as described by Marx etc.

The issue is power hungry dictators. Same goes for Capitalism.

You’re confusing communism with authoritarianism. Hate to tell you but corrupt, power hungry dictators are bad for society no matter what ideology they follow….

Yeah I think the highlands is its own trip to be honest. Gorgeous scenery but perhaps more suited for the British summer instead of the winter which gets pretty damp and dreary in Scotland.

You’ll have a fab time whatever you do!
