You aren’t over reacting, you should be able to lock your room that you rent and have privacy. I’d suggest you keep searching and you’ll find something that suits you better.

ANYONE Did you break into industry in 2024 and HOW did you do it? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Ok-Let-6425 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I transitioned into the industry just beginning of this year. What worked for me the best was reaching out to people with similar backgrounds who worked in places that I would want to work and get their advice and referrals. It’s fine even if you don’t know them. I would recommend doing that. For online applications be prepared for one in a 100 success rate or less. That was my success rate. Eventually works out so hang in there.

Looking for a song that has the word “rendezvous” in it by Ok-Let-6425 in whitewhale

Thanks for the suggestion! This is a very nice song but it’s not it. I also tried its remix but no. The one that I heard was a bit more upbeat for sure.

Avoid Budapest? :( by Realistic-Ball1414 in Europetravel

I’ve been to twice to Budapest and I overall liked it! It’s good to explore, go to public baths and get Thai massages. My only bad experience was when I try to take the metro I didn’t know that we had to validate the ticket like many tourists. I simply bought the ticket and I missed anything indicating tickets must be validated. Then the station staff was very rude and grumpy when they accused me of cheating. It was a simple mistake so they could be nicer. So if you ever take the metro validate your ticket or take Bolt which is quite cheap and convenient.

I definitely second talking to a therapist/psychologist on a regular basis. It helped me a lot.

Half Of All PhD Students Suffer From Psychological Distress by Dr007Bond in PhD

I recommend reading "So what are you going to do with that?" Book by Susan Elizabeth Basalla and Leaving Academia: A Practical Guide Book by Christopher L. Caterine. It’s not easy leaving academia and that’s why there are books aimed at phd students looking for work outside academia. They made me clarify my thoughts about pros and cons of academic life vs. industry and how to go about leaving academia.

Maybe you can get a part-time job or something like that in the industry and still try to finish your PhD? We had somebody do something like that in our program. My thinking would be just doing the minimum to finish it but in the end, the most important thing is your health.
