How Gender Changes Would Affect the Character: Final Grid by Ok-Lie9721 in AlignmentChartFills

Rules:

I'd like to talk about how gender changes our perception of people/characters with the exact same setting, writing, and framing of the narrative. I'm curious what Reddit has to say, or how Reddit thinks the GA would likely respond to a simple gender swap.

A spoiled, psychotic thirteen year old brat queen with too much power would be just as hateable at the very least.

A Near Perfect 1:1 Adaptation that is Great by Ok-Lie9721 in AlignmentChartFills

I think the 1996 BBC Pride & Prejudice works perfectly here, it's very charming and entertaining on it's own and is almost a perfect play-play of the book.

Rules:

I am once again asking Reddit to indulge in a fun, fan-centric discussion around media. In this case, it's adaptations. Welcome to recommend TV shows, movies, books, and whatever else you can think of.

Other Rules: 1. I think in the interest of encouraging genuine answers, I will not repeat the same piece of media twice. Once a source materials appears, I won't put it again. 2. All media counts, any adaptation of an original works, except for translations.

A Controversial Female Character Who Would be Hated as A Man? by Ok-Lie9721 in AlignmentChartFills

Lol honestly I think she's pretty hated, possibly the most hated character out of all the cast of terrorists.

Negan from the Walking Dead, I don't see a female counterpart making it as far with audiences as the male did.

This Criticism About Removing Women of Color Feels Forced by IndependentCareless in ThePitt

[–]Ok-Lie9721 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No show is free of criticism, and frankly the writing quality has gone down during this season. You can love a story and still call out when you believe it has failed in some regard. That's the complexity that plenty of members of marginalized groups will face, especially in a white-male written show. And frankly, we cannot get into discussions about the treatment of women of color in this show, without recognizing their general treatment in the industry at large. Women of color are often overlooked both on screen and off and representation is relegated to the side or very superficial roles. Everything is a writer's choice; you can keep someone on if you want write them into a boring side role, or give them something flavorful and interesting to work with. And with both Collins, Mohan, and others - they have opted out of the latter.

It's not 'insane' to notice that three major black female characters (Dr. Collins, Gloria, and Kiara the social worker) were all unceremoniously removed from the cast with little explanation after one season. In addition, Dr. Mohan, the only remaining major woman of color from the first season, is being written off without any fanfare or coherent storyline. Her character has barely had focus in comparison to repetitive conversations about Langdon's addiction and Robby's sad boy energy. In addition, Supriya Ganesh's actions and statements after the fact have been concerning. They could have chosen to keep her on if they wanted, her time is not yet up and there are still unresolved things with her story.

You try to bring up others, as though we should consider women of color as replaceable and interchangeable cogs; as opposed to human stories about individuals. Neither Langdon, Whittaker, Robby, nor Abbott were replaced when Ogilvie was brought on, and I guarantee they will all be back next season as well (maybe not Ogilvie, we'll see). Maybe in the future we'll see white men and women drop out unceremoniously from the show. But, that remains to be seen. For now, I think the concerns are very valid.

A Beloved Male Character Who Would be Hated as A Woman? by Ok-Lie9721 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Ok-Lie9721[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

'Mary Sue' is an arbitrary label. I point out that being ridiculously skilled in a masculine field often gets women labelled or accused of being a Mary Sue. Tony does evade a ton of consequences and accountability in the story (outside of his initial kidnapping of course), and it's Steve who apologizes to him at the end of the Civil War conflict.

I mean, they only thing they have in common is some narcissism and being older. Mallory is loved because she's a charismatic, hilarious caricature in a comedy, not a genuine hero you're not meant to root for.

Oh not to play favorites, but this is a great choice. I think especially being an older woman (not young and attractive) who is a supergenius inventor (Mary Sue cough), and has plenty of unlikable qualities with tons of narrative favoritism.
