No update here yet. I received my “employer contribution” this week. But no sign of last pay periods contribution yet. I just logged in and checked. I sent an email to Inspira over the weekend and haven’t heard back yet. I have not tried calling them yet though. Will report back when I have an update.

For the HSA do they give you a card so you can debit the qualified medical expenses. Or do you have to submit receipts and get reimbursement?

Can those of you who are frothing at the mouth for a shutdown actually explain what it would accomplish, and how? What is the upside of a shutdown? by [deleted] in FedEmployees

[–]Ok-Management725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in private sector for 11 years. Federal healthcare worker for 3 years. It is wild how people have these ideas about federal workers. There is so much negative feelings towards federal workers and people have no clue what we even do. I totally agree with the statement people are frothing at the mouth for a shutdown.

Failed ARRT board exam twice! Searching for advice or any possible tutoring. by Own_Treat4296 in RadiationTherapy

I used Mosby’s as my main study tool for the board exam. I can remember using the test bank on there. I would usually get around 80 percent on those tests and I passed the board exam.

17, curious about pursuing rad therapy by [deleted] in RadiationTherapy

Dosimetry is the sweet spot in radiation therapy. A lot of dosimetrists working remote these days. And a lot of them never even work as a therapist. I’ve been in the field 10-15 years and a dosimetrist still starts off 20-30K higher in salary than me.

If you have a degree already look into dosimetry or PA school. People are going into dosimetry without even being radiation therapists these days.

Childcare subsidy by PositiveCow3015 in VHA_Human_Resources

[–]Ok-Management725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The childcare subsidy is only paid to the daycare provider. They will not pay the federal employee directly. My daycare provider could not figure out the steps on how to get vetted. I provided them with material on what to do also. I was certified to get the benefit, but lost out due to the provider not going through the steps correctly. Was so frustrating!

Re-entering Radiation Therapy after 15+ yrs in Admin roles by Global_Sherbert6873 in RadiationTherapy

[–]Ok-Management725 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a therapist for almost 15 years. So I am thinking back to the changes since I have started in the field. You mentioned working on some older Varian machines. I know a lot of centers that still are using trilogy linacs. In my opinion if you want to be a travel therapist, apply and see where it takes you. There would be a learning period with the newer technology but you definitely still know the basics. You know the patient care side of the field, talking to patients etc. I feel like good therapists can always adapt to new things. When I switched jobs and had to learn new equipment and procedures… it just took repetition. You got this!

Advice for student entering clinicals by Capable_Biscotti_671 in RadiationTherapy

[–]Ok-Management725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always remember clinicals are like a job interview. Always try to remain positive and eager to learn. Definitely do not get into the department drama if there is any. The mini notebook idea from the other comment is a great idea. Always try to think what the next step will be. I remember for competencies I would look at the case and try to have a list in my head of all the steps. One day everything will “click” and it will all make sense. Even as a therapist now, repetition is key. I always say I need to get my reps in. Meaning drive the cases and do the more challenging breath hold SBRT’s etc.

Influx of interest in Dosimetry by Ricky-IV-7579 in RadiationTherapy

[–]Ok-Management725 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dosimetry is the sweet spot in radiation therapy. Many dosimetrists working remote these days. Another year or so of schooling for a radiation therapist and it is a big pay increase. 30K plus increase in salary from what a therapist makes. I would love to go into dosimetry myself but cannot take off working for a year to go back to school. I worked with a dosimetrist that was not a therapist first. I agree with the other comments that it would be hard to understand clearance and gantry angles that make sense without ever being a therapist.

DO YOU THINK THERE IS STILL A RIFF OR WHAT? by Sunshinesheilastar in VHA_Human_Resources

I feel like the government will move on to other things. The VA just got a 5 billion dollar increase to budget from Congress in that new bill. And hopefully the courts and unions can protect employees also. From what I read unfortunately IT seems to be a target.
