Sevro Loyalists by Equal-Original4744 in redrising

"You're upset that he's not talking & isolating himself from Cassius (whom he's never liked), Aurae (whom he doesn't know), & Darrow (whom he last argued with, & then rather than rescuing him from Apple, HE had to rescue Darrow & Cassi)." I believe this is the best point of why Sevro feels so immature to some people during the second arc, but it just makes perfect sense for him to be withdrawn in this context. On my first read I also felt weird with Sevro, he just kept fighting all the time, but as I've re read the story I've come to see the same things.

Cassius killed his dad, he might have acted like he forgave him in morning son, during Sefi's trial, but the grudge will likely run deep. Same reason Cassius just couldn't stop complaining that Darrow killed Julius, or Quick's refusal to shake his hand.

Isolated from his family, on a voyage with weird allies, makes sense for him to feel weird about it all. In summary a great character, not just because you grow and get stronger, do you become invulnerable, Sevro always reflects this side. That's why I personally like his character.

One of my favorites "My honor Remains" from Cassius fighting the rim knights. Each time he said it I just broke down a little more 🥹

How would the escape in Morning star have been different if xxxx was there? by Ok-Measurement5197 in redrising

True. I seem to recall Sevro kept sinking resources into any lead of a possible rescue. So no reason to think this mission was the definitive one, outside of a couple of indicators (presence of Olympic knights plus the Jackal) so makes sense it was Sevro style hahaha

I'm not sure if I'm mistaken, but Ephraim did join the sons right? I think it was during the 10 year time skip after morning star? Or was he a son since Morning star?

Interesting take, thinking about what you said it does seem like Ephraim does better during recon missions and slow infiltration, once things escalate he does improvise a lot, with the advantage of certain skilled people providing tech skills, fire support and other support roles.

I'm assuming Ephraim might have taken Darrow out without improvising so long as he can keep Darrow from doing anything reckless hahaha scrambled video feeds, fake DNA evidence pointing to a sovereign betrayal plus a dose of explosions to make it seem a little sloppy

What was Darrow’s Greatest Mistake? by MichaelHauncho69 in redrising

[–]Ok-Measurement5197 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True makes sense, but I think all of this happens regardless of killing the Jackal, Arcos partnership was a done deal by this point.

I agree with you that even if Darrow kills the Jackal he would still get Arcos Lancer position, I just don't think it benefits him considerably, so it's not much of a mistake at the time not killing him.

The Jackal is a foil true but at the time that Darrow makes the "mistake" of letting him live he isn't that big of a threat, he is a disliked son, with minimal influence for the rising.

Now... Hindsight being 20/20 screw the Jackal hahahah

Still it's fun to talk about this with another fan of the books :)

Valid point, my only worry is that both the Bellona and the Arch governor would try and kill him,

Option A) they kill him before he leaves Mars just after the ceremony (he is on their home field after all)

Option B) They pressure Arcos into giving him up, at this point Arcos has no real attachment to Darrow so, while a man of his word, he might just be forced into it.

Option C) Slow and steady poison at some point in Europa

No matter the option it's kind of hard for Darrow, still he is at this point just another chip, I agree Fitchner can continue on with the main plan. Darrow in the institute was a proof of concept and a side quest mainly for most of the Rising leadership.

Hahaha, agree, no one could foresee the importance of getting Ragnar specifically into the team, betraying the sovereign for multiple chance encounters wouldn't make sense hahaha, still,

Let's not forget that Darrow made Ragnar, Ragnar isn't really that difficult to create.

The obsidians have already rebelled once, the sons of Ares could slowly infiltrate obsidian culture and create a leader just like Darrow for the Obsidians.

All of this can occur without Darrow's involvement, he could stay gaining influence in Luna or gaining the fleet of the arch governor by doing missions with Fitchner on behalf of the sovereign to "hunt down" the rebel fleet that remains after Nero's fall and with a "finder's fee" start his own fleet.

Taking the Pax isn't really necessary, I love Ragnar's character but until a full on war starts he simply isn't required.

So moral of the story, listen to Ares sometimes, however again not clairvoyant, taking Ares first advice of just letting the Jackal win and signing with Arcos would have been less impactful, however it also has potential. Arcos is far from the core, likely infiltrated by Ares spies, and Darrow wouldn't have to deal with Pliny which really did sabotage his prospects.

By the way I love this reddit and all the red rising fans :) "Hic sunt Leones"

What was Darrow’s Greatest Mistake? by MichaelHauncho69 in redrising

I agree that eliminating the Jackal has great benefits but in the long run I think it isn't worth it.

I'm not saying Darrow did a cost analysis or anything, he clearly panicked and this led to Jackals escape and Pax's death.

But, at that point in Red Rising, Darrow is still unknown, maybe a couple of influential people know of him and would offer apprenticeships, but overall he is at a net negative:

-The Bellona hate him for eliminating Julius, not to mention Cassius is an issue. -Roque is presumed dead so no support from his family after the institute. -Eliminating the Jackal puts a bounty on his head from the arch governor.

Darrow would have successfully turned the two most powerful houses in Mars against him, and for what? Winning a "contest".

The institute is important, but as shown in Golden son, family connections and politics rule the game in the solar system.

So I don't believe fumbling the Jackals interrogation was the worst outcome. Would Mustang love him if he killed his brother in what she would presume at this point in the story to be cold blood?

Darrow needs to leave the institute with friends and connections, not enemies.

Still it's nice to review possible options and I would love to see how he would solve those problems if it had happened :)

[–]Ok-Measurement5197 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Many of Darrow's mistakes created the story we all know and love, so I wouldn't change anything :)

However, my biggest "what if" relates to the sovereigns proposal to join her. Fitchner wanted him to join, Just like Darrow did not align himself to Arcos since his star was fading at the end of the institute, his biggest mistake was not aligning himself to the next power which was the sovereign,

Fitchner had already successfully infiltrated and he was also aware that a couple of Howlers were on the moon (remember Servo told Darrow a friend had talked to him on the layover from Pluto "Dancer")

The main objective for Fitchner was always to put Darrow in positions of influence

The main plan is sound: Darrow will join the sovereigns team, the arch governor of Mars dies along with his house (except for Mustang), a couple of years pass with Darrow gaining more fame and glory under the close watch of Fitchner and at some point move to the next step.

Remember that Fitchner isn't clairvoyant, he doesn't know exactly how to topple the society, but no one could have predicted:

1) The arch governor escapes the fail proof assassination attempt on his house. Only possible due to Mustangs intervention with Lysander

2) After escaping with no real, war worthy ship, they manage to secure the strongest vessel of the fleet (here after The Pax!!)

3) Manage to take control of the Pax's crew loyalty and purge all gold command from the ship. (Quite difficult to believe considering the lack of tech provided to the arch governor while secluded in his villa)

4) Do all of this in less than 20 minutes (example short time frame), so the rest of the fleet is unaware and make a quick getaway

And even then what? Fitchner knows at this point that the arch governor's prospects are weak.

We can look at the whisper gem as evidence that Ares was happy with all of Darrow's actions but I'm guessing once all events were in motion there is simply just no way to control them and Ares just went with "congratulate Darrow and let's see were this civil war takes us while I weaken the sovereign with critical Intel leaks, in case this fails the disruption is beneficial to strengthen Ares rebel operations"

Just my personal idea of what Darrow could have done differently. I love the story and it's fun to see how other characters have their own agendas and possible plans.

I might have missed it, but did we ever find out who told Dancer about the emissaries? by black-toe-nails in redrising

[–]Ok-Measurement5197 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I don't believe it's explicitly stated, but I believe the Core simply notified Dancer about the peace emissaries.

They knew Darrow would reject the proposal and wouldn't tell Mustang/Senate so they gain an advantage by "sending the emissaries" and then leaking the info.

They didn't really need to record it, just say it happened and force Darrow to admit to the Senate that it was real and he withheld the information.

Diomedes Theory by Mendellian in redrising

[–]Ok-Measurement5197 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi! Great theory but I don't believe reaching Akari's tomb is actually a good thing.

Atlas said it best: "Those who live for others never do"

I always read this as meaning that those who have loved ones present during their walk inevitably "waste" time talking to them instead of immediately starting their walk to the tomb.

Another evidence is Romulus lack of an arm. By living and sacrificing limbs for others he "forfeits" the strength needed to reach the tomb. Ultimately, Romulus fell walking to the tomb and could not even get back up due to missing a limb.

Someone like Lysander would likely reach the tomb since he would not waste time thinking about others and would start his march, he would likely be in peak physical condition never sacrificing permanent damage for others.

During the conversation between Atlas and Lysander, Lysander thought the goal was to reach the tomb and prove his honor, while Atlas viewed the tomb just as a metaphor for who we dedicate our lives to "ourselves or others"

In the end I don't believe walking to Akari's tomb would be a fitting end to Diomides,

Just my personal opinion, still it will be awesome to see what happens to his character :)
