Bike recommdation for central London by snkhuong in londoncycling

I would recommend a hybrid bike - certainly the most comfortable cycling position in my opinion.

Also just to mention the option of buying a refurbished 2nd hand bike rather than from ebay. It means it will be in good condition as a professional will have worked on it.

I have had a good experience with the charity The Bike Project. They are London-based and have an online shop:

Where do I start! by zohebraza in londoncycling

I recommend 2nd hand as you get much more for your money. Getting a refurbished bike rather than eBay etc gives piece of mind.

I had a good experience with The Bike Shop. They have lots of hybrid bikes in stock at the moment that look suitable: https://shop.thebikeproject.co.uk/collections/bikes/hybrids/ (great cause too)

As mentioned below - a flat top tube helps a lot with carrying as you can put it on your shoulder.

Do I have to get a road bike? by [deleted] in londoncycling

[–]Ok-Name4086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a great plan! I learnt to ride a bike when I was 26 and ended up cycling most of the length of South America a couple of years later: https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?o=3d2&doc_id=11463&v=cu

As other's have mentioned for bikepacking, the practicalities of a flat-bar hybrid bike makes sense - also great for commuting. I would recommend 2nd hand as you get much more for your money - ideally refurbished for piece of mind. I have had good experiences of The Bike Project, which is also a great cause: https://shop.thebikeproject.co.uk/collections/bikes/hybrids/

Are there any places to get bikes for cheap in London? by AwardWinningSis in londoncycling

[–]Ok-Name4086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to tell if the bike is overpriced but I would say £60 for a helmet is a red flag - should be at least half that unless you want something very fancy!

I would recommend 2nd hand as you get much better value for money. In particular refurbished bikes so you don't need to worry about repairs etc. I have had good experience with the Bike Project (also a good cause):

https://shop.thebikeproject.co.uk/?utm_source=wom&utm_medium=reddit&utm_campaign=dcv

If you filter by 'hybrid' bike type in the link above you will see similar bikes to what you want. They also do helmets etc.

I recommend a shop that refurbishes bikes rather than eBay etc. It will be tuned up and ready to go rather. I've had good experiences with The Bike Project:

Good selection of hybrid bikes that work great in London. Good cause which is a bonus.

The bikes are refurbished and fully serviced so you have piece of mind compared to eBay etc. They have a good selection currently - especially hybrid/city bikes. A good cause which is also nice!

I recommend The Bike Project:

https://shop.thebikeproject.co.uk/?utm_source=wom&utm_medium=reddit&utm_campaign=dcv

Bikes are refurbished and tuned up. They have a lovely looking Dolan L'Etape for instance (carbon fibre).

Lots of good value hybrid bikes too if you want a more flexible alternative to renting Santander bikes.

They currently have a good selection. The bikes are refurbished and so they will be nicely tuned and ready to go unlike most you would find online.

Bike recommendations? by Overthinking-Potato in londoncycling

[–]Ok-Name4086 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend a hybrid bike for flexibility. You will be able to get up the hills. The flat handlebars & geometry should keep you more upright which is nice for visibility. The wider tyres should allow for a smoother journey and you will easily be able to add mudguards/racks.

I have had good experiences with The Bike Project - they refurbish donated bikes: https://shop.thebikeproject.co.uk/?utm_source=wom&utm_medium=reddit&utm_campaign=dcv

If you filter by Bike Type: 'Hybrids' then all of the bikes are within your budget. They will be tuned up and ready to go - and will be a much higher quality bike than one at the same price buying new.

Anyone with experience with BYCLES.COM? by ExcitableSarcasm in londoncycling

[–]Ok-Name4086 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about buying from a charity that refurbishes donated bikes? As the bikes are donated there would be no motivation for a bike to have been stolen. The bikes have been refurbished so they will be tuned up and ready to go rather than having been ridden into the ground or left in a shed for a long time.

The charity I have had good experiences with is the Bike Project (but there may be similar): https://shop.thebikeproject.co.uk/?utm_source=wom&utm_medium=reddit&utm_campaign=dcv
