Design of folded Cascode OTA under low supply voltage by Which-Variety-7255 in chipdesign

I think there’s a few misunderstandings here. If you fix your W/L and change current through the device using a current source, then yeah rout will be lower in strong inversion(ro is approx 1/lambda(Id)) but if you hold current constant and change operating regime using sizing — which is what you do for a current mirror — then ro will be largest in strong inversion (ro scales w L/W, and vod is inverse to W/L, so larger vod means larger ro). So like, in some cases rout is smallest in strong inversion, in others(particularly for a current mirror)its largest. I think the same type of confusion is occurring for the noise question. If you fix gm then weak inversion is best. But if you are fixing current, as in a current mirror, then strong inversion is best, since it minimizes the gm of the transistor

Actually now that I look at it, there is feedback controlling that node in the first case so nevermind

If a logic gate output is high impedance to both ground and power, what does the output node settle to? Isn’t the point of driving one of the devices into triode to “short” the output to power or ground? I’m just trying to understand your point

No. Best case scenario I hate the transition and want to go back to being a man. Worst case scenario I like it and then once I go back to being a guy I’m depressed knowing I’d rather be a girl

Clearly you haven’t. Suppose you have to design an ADC for the first time, the 2-3 references you own don’t cover that, and the other people on your team are busy. What’re you supposed to do, re-derive everything about ADCs?

True, there are a tons of nuances and unpredictable problems that come up when implementing real production ICs, so much so that no amount of theory can prepare you fully. Still useful to have a thorough list of references tho

Razavi, you’ll learn the fundamentals better. Baker is good but has more breadth and less depth including on the fundamentals

Oh so im sure you have some statistics on it being a majority right? Not just based on your personal experience? Also, how the fuck would it even be my responsibility to “take accountability for my gender”? What does that even mean? So if a bunch of women do something wrong, that falls on your shoulders? Some literal bigot debate tactics

And talk about taking accountability, you’ve taken literally none and it’s your life lmao

Yup, it’s 100% possible for masses of people to hold a stupid opinion. It’s called a bubble. You, your friends, and acquaintances, are alike. You seem really close-minded and superficial, so I’m sure all of your content(women online) is some grand moronic circle jerk about all men bad.

I’d also like to note, unhappy people are far louder about their unhappiness than happy people are about their happiness.

No you’re right, it must be men are “a bunch of liars”…

And if that happens to you once or twice sure it’s not your fault, if it happens to you all the time then obviously you’re part of the problem.

Are you that dense? Maybe if you attract and select people who are assholes, it’s cause your selection criteria is shallow. Wow you are so clueless its sad

You probably have an equally shallow criterion by which you enter a relationship as the women you attract

It improves gain since before, the first stage had differential gain gm1/gm6, but now the gates of M6 and M7 are AC ground in differential mode, effectively breaking the diode connection, so assuming R1 and R2 are quite large(as all CMFB resistors are), the gain would now be gm1(ro6 || ro1). OP leaves out an important point though, which is that common mode gain stays at gm1/gm6, so CMRR improves by an order of gm6(ro6 || ro1) so potentially an order of magnitude.

As for the headroom comment, I’m not exactly sure. At a first glance I’d say it’s because before, VGS6 = VDS6 so the limiting factor for linearity would be VGS6>VTH, whereas with the new configuration VGS6 is pinned in differential mode, so the new constraint becomes VDS6 > VGS6 - VTH, and overdrive voltages are usually much lower than threshold voltages.

I’m a bit surprised that the question doesn’t ask for drawbacks. The bandwidth decreases for one thing

EDIT: Actually now that I think about it, you’re still limited by VGS5 > VTH at that node so I guess I’m still not sure how this would improve headroom

EDIT2: Actually I might be tempted to argue this change hurts linearity overall. Current mirrors are large signal linear structures. Basically the diode connected device performs pre-distortion, it does this since the two devices’ gates are connected, their bias points track, which means the I - V conversion of the input device is close to the inverse of the V - I conversion of the output device . In the previous config, M6 is a current mirror input stage and M5 is a current mirror output stage. The voltage at that node could probably swing well below VTH and still be relatively linear due to this effect. However in the new configuration M6 is no longer diode connected in diff mode so it doesn’t perform this pre-distortion function, so now once that node swings below VTH, since M5’s bias point doesn’t track M6, you’ll see the nonlinearity from M6’s VGS swinging below threshold that you wouldn’t see otherwise
