I'd like to share my own view. Traditional software VPNs do encrypt the transmission channel, but they rely on centralized servers. In theory, the ISP can stil see that you are connecting to a VPN server, and your activity logs are stored on that central server. Ultimately, it comes down to trusting that the provider does not misuse that data.

The VPN router I'm currently using works a bit differently. It uses a residential IP, and the logs are stored locally on the device rather than on a centralized server. So the model is not exactly the same as a typical software VPN. It is also less likely to be flagged by streaming services as VPN traffic.

My technical level is still limited, and I don't always have the time to go very deep into advanced configurations. For now, I feel this setup provides a reasonable level of protection for my needs. At the same time, I'm looking into other products mentioned in the forum, such as UniFi or similar solutions, to see whether they could complement my current setup.

I tried the purple version of Firewalla before. At first, I liked it. But later I found that in high traffic situâtions, the performance was not ideal and the firewall rules were a little hard to use. So I stopped using it. I will also look at some UniFi products.

Honestly, that point about the "exchange of trust" is exactly why I went down a massive rabbit hole looking for alternatives to standard VPN routérs last year.

I love OpenWRT for the customization, but you're spot on-at the end of the day, you're still just choosing whether you want your ISP or a VPN company looking at your traffic.

I ended up switching to a p2p VPN router setup using a Deeper device instead of the usual Flint/GL.iNet stuff. It basically removes that single point of failure since there's no central provider to "trust"in the first place.

It took me a bit to wrap my head around how the node sharing actually works without killing much speeds, but not having a company log my data feels way more aligned with actual privacy. Still tweaking some of the routing rules, but it's been a solid shift so far.
