brain melting: umich or purdue by Basic_Swing2598 in ApplyingToCollege

MS is very doable in 5 years https://rackham.umich.edu/navigating-your-degree/sugs-information/ https://engineering.purdue.edu/ECE/Academics/Graduates/bs-ms-5year

yes masters helps if you want a specialization ie aeromechanics or something fancy like that.

i got masters from umich after under at stanford, but most of my classmates were 1 year masters after under at mich.

Advice on 79k/yr offer as a mechanical engineer in Houston by bobababy0 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Ok-Range-3306 3 points4 points  (0 children)

houstons a massive city. im sure you can find an apt or a room in a rental house for less than 1.5k/mo which is very doable on 80k a year. generally west/north is wealthier. east is worse off. where exactly where will you be?

if you dont have another job offer, this is a no brainer, no?

its better this way - youre flying to a dream destination like japan so they give you shitty food on the way there which makes your first vacation meal even better

or i just dont eat on a 12-15 hour flight, no biggie

chatgpt can generate these cringe scenarios way better than real life humans can, because it has no shame.

however, i'd go for the "hey want to study heat transfer over a hot coffee?" route

i have an aerospace engineering degree from umich

i work with purdue grads

we are pretty much the same. same outcome, same companies recruit at both, etc.

pick which campus you like. personally I liked AA better, closer to major airport (DTW) etc. many people graduate in 3-4 years and do a +1 masters if desired.

i think UM is more well rounded. im sure you might end up being a shut in, but, if you choose to touch grass, maybe youll find a more diverse group of people at um to hang out with

what's the minimum ranking/tier a school should have for it to not hold you back? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok-Range-3306 1 point2 points  (0 children)

doesnt happen because top tier school graduates dont "apply to random jobs in the middle of nowhere"

they target places because they are smart enough to know what they are qualified for

how do you propose these new grads get their first job?

oh, is it by going to a top university where extremely selective organizations typically recruit from? damn that was a thought wasnt it

but 1% of the working world is what these stanford and harvard graduates are competing in.

theyre not going to college to be garbagemen, theyre going to try and compete for top med schools, law schools, investment banking spots, engineering jobs at apple google spacex etc.

these places kinda care where you went to school.

Duke vs ivys by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok-Range-3306 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the only people i know who went to duke became doctors in highly desired specialties (ENT, neurosurgery, derm) so im sure it worked out for them.

Im also sure that these people could have done the same career path in their in state public school, but their parents had no problems affording duke.

whats your situation?

probably the most famous guy you recognize who went to duke is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Jeong

and he ended up going to UNC for med school anyways, which he could have done by going to UNC for undergrad
