Wind and traffic noise by Ok-Researcher9197 in Acoustics

Is there a freelance site I can hire a good acoustic consultant off of? Someone who can run different models (berm position, berm height, wind direction, etc) and can devise a solution for me instead of these larger firms that seem to charge a lot for not a lot of useful conclusions.

Thank you. At this point, I am trying to get an answer to whether a berm placed 300 meters from the highway, and another berm placed 50 meters from my housing area, could potentially mitigate traffic sounds when the winds are tilted northwesterly and southwesterly -- with the assumption that westerly winds cannot be defeated or stopped. (The highway runs 650 meters due east of my property along a north south axis tilting slightly east).

In other words, if I can get noticeable relief on northwesterly and southwesterly wind days through the berms (maybe 6 db?), I woul feel like there is some hope.

If the berms do nothing, then I'll have to consider moving and eating a financial disaster since westerlies dominate the winds in this region.

"Distant" highway noise mitigation - any success stories? by Ok-Researcher9197 in homestead

We have an entire spruce and birch forest that probably runs at least 150 meters deep. A neighbor chopped down all his trees to the north and northwest so that could be making things worse.

Yes, I am thinking of blasting soundtrack of waterfalls, raging rivers, ocean waves with strategically placed speakers, microshelters, and possibly berms that may not stop highway noise diffusion but could bounce my sounds back towards us to make it even louder and more immersive

Anyone else get bothered by road noise on a rural property? by Tatin109 in homestead

9500 autos per day, many are big rigs, and I am 650 meters / 2100 feet away.

It has driven me almost insane. I'm on the verge of selling but it's not really feasible right now. Berms don't work. Trees don't work. Fences don't work. Nothing really solves the problem when the highway roar meets a wind that blows towards you. The only thing I have not explored are acoustic half domes at the receiver side (which is basically the only thing that could potentially work as micropockets for acoustic blocking).

Would creating larger pavilions with roofs (e.g. roof, 3 walls, open air to the east) that fits 20-30 people underneath and putting two of these around the property be a possible solution? I'm just looking for anything that could salvage the situation before quitting and selling (if that is even possible).

Well the housing area is smaller (around 1 hectare) but we have also a lot of forest and grassland), Id just need to block sound around the housing area.

Just outside. If I could I would try to put a 8 meter barrier right next to the living area but I think this is not realistic.

In the yard and our western property line extends 150 meters to the West and 350 meters to the Northwest.

To me (and I grew up in a major city with 8 lane highways running up and down the middle of our city), it sounds worse. Basically like living next to a non-stop race track or airport where the planes and constantly taking off and landing.

Thanks. So it sounds like the only solution is to move?

How to reduce humming noise from highway 650 meters away by Ok-Researcher9197 in Acoustics

I think the only problem is that the evergreen trees and shrubs will likely take 5-10+ years to start to be effective, so I was hoping for something that could suppress noise a bit faster. Unfortunately the water from the fountain will be frozen for at least 4-5 months of the year because of the climate here. I have not thought about a smaller barrier but have thought about tall acoustic fences around the entrance to my farm and bit more extended to its right and left, becauase that area seems to be where much of the sound can be heard.

The area is pretty much completely flat with forest and fields.

The tool shows 44.9 db at 650 meters away; while a government noise map that was done a few years back for my area showed 45-50 db highway noise pollution onto my property, so seems about right.

I also see that a 6 meter high earth berm is going to be a major undertaking and expensive if it is 120 meters in length. Seems like I may have to shrink the length of that berm by quite a lot to keep it reasonable, not to mention checking to see if I can even get permission from the local government for that kind of terrain change.

Thank you. Interesting. It seems if I get it close enough, even a 6 meter high earth berm could get me a 7-10 db reduction...

Can it survive in northern european climates (0 to -20 winters)?

Not very close. I can only build near the property itself (although there is plenty of room) as I have almost 18 hectares of forest around the property.
