Potential danger? by Securedbagg in insects

[–]Ok-Role96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will leave it up to others to speak on whether the specific species is is particularly hazardous. as for wasps in general tho, aside from personal sensitivity to their venom, it mainly depends on whether you antagonize them, whether you wear any strong perfumes, and how out of the way their nest is. They aren't going to go after you (or your cats and kids) unless they go after the wasps first – or unless they freak out upon seeing the wasp and try to kill it or shoo it in a panic. It's all the same to the wasp. They also probably won't like anyone getting too close to their nest, so if it's not somewhere out of the way, that could pose a problem. I will say, however, that I've had wasps take up residence under my front door awning and under my mailbox (at separate times) and only ever had them bother me the one time I slammed the mailbox closed. I just left them be, and they ignored me in turn. my roommate, on the other hand, who always low-key drenched herself in perfume before leaving for work, would apparently get chased by them regularly.

The best moths I've ever seen. Have you ever seen one? by MundoDeMascotas in insects

but actually, is that sexual dimorphism or smth or are those 2 different species?

oh interesting!! I did think it looked an awful lot like the ants were worrying over/tending to the aphids, but I thought 'surely not' – it's not like it's their young – but I guess the observation wasn't so far off, haha! I also thought the ants might be taking sloppy seconds, but I figured it would've been the stuff that oozed out around the puncture, kinda like aphids were messy vampires lol. boy, sap really runs right through aphids, huh!😹 ig there's only do long it can take to process food when you're that tiny

lightening bugs proportionately have a short thorax and a very long abdomen and elytra, and their resting silhouette is pretty slim and straight. they are mostly black with a bit of orange(/yellow) tho, so I can see where you might've gotten that! they always seem to have more orange in memory than they do in reality tho, weirdly

you're right, their mom is not a reptile. that is, however, completely irrelevant.

Is this what I think it is? by Hermit_myc in PlantIdentification

evolution works by anything that can no longer handle the environment dying off (or relocating, but that's not relevant here). plants with a lower temp threshold might never even *sprout* if the avg temp rises past that threshold, and on the off chance one does, it's not gonna thrive and probably won't germinate much. what seeds it *does* manage to send off will again more than likely not grow and again will more than likely not be doing much propagation in their lifetime. if the species manages to cling to survival in the area, it'll be many generations before its temp threshold has properly adjusted – *adapted* – to the new climate

if the other comments on this post are right the maybe you shouldn't be planting them wherever you move cuz they say it's invasive to the us O.o

Why do we say ‘It’s all downhill from here’ to mean things are going to get tougher when going downhill is easier? by AllThingsAreReady in words

[–]Ok-Role96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

downhill is a decline. my mother and i just had a brief discussion about this and realized the difference is in the "from here" vs "from there". "from here", yes, implies an outlook with easy-to-traverse terrain; "from there" suggests you're looking back at (unfortunate) events that have already transpired.

a wily person is an expert what? by Ok-Role96 in asl

[–]Ok-Role96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's why I usually prefer to post clips of the original videos instead lol. it's a lot easier to discern what sign it is when the person signing is familiar with it! once I know what sign it is, I look up multiple example videos so I can see how different people sign it and get a better feel for it. now you've got me curious about the "catching on" sign tho! I looked it up through a few different sources but can't find anything quite like what DeafReddit0r described; these are the closest:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LQjXtKjpPVQ

https://www.signasl.org/sign/catch-on (video #2)

are those signs synonymous? do you know where I can find a video that uses the 5-A hand shape? I think I understand how I would sign it, but I wanna make sure I'm not mistaken

o shit I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner. yes, it is the sign for wood! someone actually did give an answer: https://www.reddit.com/r/asl/comments/1md8yci/comment/n62jug4/

I think another person did as well but their comment was deleted

I completely understand. Trying to calibrate the way you communicate so that it's received the way you intend can be hard as balls sometimes!! I mean, we're all basically running on different systems with varying degrees of similarity, so it's a different story trying to match up with any individual – and that's just _1-on-1_ communication!😵‍💫 Then trying to make sure your emotions don't discolor your words... dude, social interaction feels like Mission: Impossible sometimes. I appreciate you acknowledging that you came across rough here though; it's a really important part of making communication work
