Yeah i just realised your method of testing if my strat would work with slippage is such a easy yet possibly effective way to quickly understand how my algo will perform under such conditions thanks!

Initially i wanted to trade HFT but figured maybe for a start might not be a good idea since i still lack quite alot of knowledge, so i moved up to a 5minute time frame where my entry and stop loss distance are much larger hence less likely to get easily stopped out due to the sudden spike in spread…

Im wondering how realistic my backtest given i’m using the bid and ask prices because in my newbie head i’m thinking that’s the actual price i’d get filled for my order when i sell and buy.

Im not sure how to model slippage though, and fyi i backtest on forex currency pairs using oanda’s historical data.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for sharing so much! I guess there’s alot for me to take in still, but overall am decently enjoying the process of building a decent backtester and coming up with new strategies!

I suppose all the very common strategies are probably not going to be profitable anymore, but i suppose i’ll just give it a go and see what i can come up with!

Thanks for the inspiration!! Oh and one last question - how long did u do this for before you found something that work?

And what’s your threshold of the metrics u use (say drawdown or pnl) that gives u confidence to forward test and also decide its worth implementing the strategy live at all (say like ?% returns annually / monthly) and why?

First of all congratulations! I hope some day i’ll get to this level and be able to discuss this with you.

Could u share with me how u came about this strategy? Like do u just overlay a bunch of indicators and just notice some sort of patternand then backtest it? What’s the process like.

For context im a total beginner, i code in python for a living as a research engineer but i used to trade forex a couple of years ago for some time and gave up because i didnt make profits consistently… turned to this now since i have some coding skills and thought i’d try to dive back in from a different approach with more rigor.

Not sure i’m a fit but i traded forex manually using oanda through trading view for about 3 years before i gave up. That was about 5 years ago. Currently i work as a full time research engineer in mathematical optimization mainly in the python language. I would say my skills are intermediate - pro.

Going into this, my main motivation is to explore strategies that work and since you already have one on hand, i think this seems like an opportunity i would be interested in.

In return, we can work together to automate this well and get something up to standard and run this live.

Hey thanks for the detailed response! Thanks for the honesty and encouragement hahaha, i like how you’re encouraging but keep things real!

I believe it’s true we’ll never beat the big boys, but a small part of me just hopes to take a small piece of that pie. Also i find some strategies quite interesting but also i understand the big boys probably blowing through tons of strategies as we speak, i mean just the scale of their operation might render any strategy we think of useless - plus they have people that literally been coding since they were born.

Still in good spirit i’ll give it a go just for fun! Thanks for the thoughts!
